Hello from France
Hi there, Very happy to have found this forum (by chance), while looking for information on... banana trees (of course!). My name is John, although I am of French nationality, and I will be 60 years old on August 25th. Basically, passionate about old vehicles, I take pleasure in loving banana trees because they bring an exotic side and remind me of the countries I have visited. The second reason is that they grow very quickly, which at my age is an advantage (much more than with the palm trees that I will never see grow...). I have 4 different varieties: - Musa basjoo: for 3 years (in open ground). I am very happy because one of them is starting to flower. - Musa Yunnan Gigante (musa yunnan giant form) (bought 3 weeks ago on the net: it is starting to make its 1st leaf since its arrival) - I will plant it in the ground next year. - Musa Himalayan Mountain (idem: for 3 weeks) - Musa Cavendish (found in a supermarket 1 year ago for... 1 €uro: he's tiny... ) Finally, I have an Ensete ventricosum Maurelli (for the 2nd year). It spent the winter in the garage, but this year it will stay in the ground (hoping it won't freeze...) And finally, a buddy has to give me a Musa Helens hybrid reject (I believe). There you go, you know everything!!! |

Re: Hello from France
Welcome, Iseki!
I lived in the Dordogne, near the Auvézère, but am back here in the US. Was very common to see mats of Musa growing in many of the wet low lying areas. Glad to have you here with us! ~Che

Re: Hello from France
Thanks Valentine
The Dordogne is a beautiful region (with many very pretty castles and real gastronomic traditions [if you like duck :Ha:]), and where it is often very hot in summer. I live much further north: in Normandy, near Rouen. For the musa basjoo it remains possible, but for the varieties with edible fruits, it is a real challenge |

Re: Hello from France
Hello
I cut the bananas and the flower pictured above in September: the bananas remained tiny. 1 week ago, I protected the Maurelli and the Basjoo. Surprise: there was a big flower, but I had to cut it because it would have frozen. With regret, I also cut the banana tree whose trunk was about 25cm in diameter; shame... I will take pictures of the shields. @ soon, John |

Re: Hello from France
Hello everyone
What's the news here? The Maurelli did not survive (what a pity!) The first year I was able to save it by pulling it out and putting it in the garage, but last year it was so big and so heavy that I couldn't... (Curiously, it's at the heart that it rotted, while the leaves on the sides were in good condition) The Yunan Giant also did not survive (it was never really in shape, even when I received it). He dragged all winter and his putting outside last April, will have been fatal to him (yet no frost) The Himalayan Mountain (edible bananas / freezes at -10° celcius), spent the winter at home. He has now been in the ground for 2 months. Its restart has been slow, But I think it's better : 2 leaves in 1.5 weeks. The Basjoo are in great shape. They have spent the winter well and the tallest is already 4m high. And last week... 1 flower!!!!! (very big) . I spoke to a nurseryman about it: he didn't believe me... It must be said that bananas in Normandy are rather rare... In the aviary there is also a basjoo (planted in 2022): it froze at the bazse (not protected), but it started well this year. Finally the little Cavendish are fine (they remain dwarfs, but I can't plant them in the ground, so...) That's the news ! @ Soon ( I'l try to post some pictures ) Last edited by Iseki : 06-21-2023 at 12:14 PM. |
