View Full Version : Ae Ae propagation project

I got together with Rene, (Greenie), recently and we decided to use some of my Ae Ae pups for a project. We're going to see how many pups we can get out of 7 mature plants. I know they have a little ways to go before they reach maturity, but it will be fun to watch them grow. Maybe we will come up with a contest or something a little down the road, for an Ae Ae pup? Who knows what tomorrow will bring! Anyway, we spent the better part of two days adding irrigation, and then getting the soil ready for planting. We added all kinds of good stuff! We even had time for three hours of Frisbee golf, and a couple of good meals. Here's what it looked like when we finished planting them today:

From all that I have read and heard about the AE AE banana I am impressed with how beautiful the foilage is. I would think being in what appears to be full sun in south Florida the leaves would burn easily. Very nice, are you feeding them something special to deal with stress? silica or a silica based suppliment maybe?

Awesome. I hope to have a similar project someday -- maybe on a slightly smaller scale due to budget constraints. I have two questions for you: do your leaves get burned in that sun exposure, and how far apart are they planted from each other. Thanks.

They do get a little burnt, but nothing to cry about. Look closely at the largest plant. They are planted 6' apart as they are only being grown to produce pups!

Come over and get some bananas. I had 5 stems of Ae Ae in the last 6 months. The oldest lost all of its leaves. I cut them so the pups can start to grow. They are grate when cooked but not too good raw. They needed at least a month more on the plant. The other 4 were cut off because they didn't have enough leaves to produce good fruit. The leaves might as well help the new pups

from left to right on the top pic,the first two Ae Ae plants are a different strain from the rest.I have noticed that strain number 3 is the most vigorous of the three. They are all receiving the same amount of sun, water and food. The 3rd strain also has about a 90 to 10 percent green/white ratio which helps with faster growing and propagation. The three strains withstood the cold pretty well,so in cold tolerance they are equal.

Was that week in the mid 30's the coldest they experienced? You mentioned that you were spraying with fish emulsion and humus once a week. [Sorry, I just discovered this thread tonight, lol] I'm a total garden newbie. Where would a gardener find that or is it homemade?
In any event, great job dudes! Good luck!

No,not necessarily. The other 2 strains that are older have only a couple of pups between them combined. The New Project plants are already starting to pup at only 5-6 feet.
The plan is to cut them before they fruit and divide and separate any pups produced. Some will be replanted, some will be donated, and I think Nanaman :2787: will be holding some sort of contest or something like that for this forum and its members.

Jarred, There is an average of about 5 or more pups per plant now on (strain C) plants but they all starting pupping at the start of June.

One more question if you don't mind: where can I read about and find information about the different strains of AeAe that you have referred to? You don't have to take the time to educate me, but if you can point me in the right direction to look. I'm going to go check out those links that you and Harvey posted. I wasn't aware that there are different strains. Would you be able to tell me which strain I have? Here are some pictures. Thanks.

Clare
The term(strain) has no official ranking status in plants and botany. It refers a term to describe the collective descendants produced from a common ancestor that share a uniform morphological or physiological character. This could be a genetic mutation or something else.
In this growing trial, we have planted 3 different Ae Ae collected from 3 different sources.I am no expert but I can easily see in growing pattern how one of the sample plants out grows the other by an easy margin. These plants have all been planted using the same medium, soil, fert, water etc....
I have come to the conclusion that one of the strains has a better genetic mutation than the other two.
Again,I am no expert and I am growing these as a hobby as I have always done.
on a side note, none of the plants from the project show the strong pink that your plant is showing in the top of the leaf center or midrib.

Thanks so much, Greenie! You may be a hobbiest, but you sure are knowledgeable! This is a very interesting project to me. It would be fun to know if the strain that is outgrowing the rest also produces fruit first or produces more pups than the others.
Thanks for the info on the pink stripe. I noticed that too, and I like it a whole lot. I think this is the pup that I got from Hawaii. Mine could be 'Strain D.' LOL!
I've been doing some research on the pink midrib, and now I'm wondering whether this is actually an AeAe at all or perhaps the Dwarf Namwah.

Clare I have purchased 3 AeAe that have had the pink midrib and edges. This newest one is from Hawaii and has very distinct coloring. When the leaves first come out there is no pink at all but seems to come as the leaf ages. I have no doubts it is an Ae though.
I don't believe the Variegated NamWah has the jagged or pixilated type color edging that the Ae has. More blended. I think yours is AeAe. Just my opinion.

Congratulations Greenie/NANAMAN, I see Your AEAE plantation is coming along nicely.:nanadrink:
My AEAE had no signs of pink until I moved it outside and added humic acid. The lower PH may have caused this. Or it could have been lower night temperatures. I took a picture of my AEAE and Nam wah together for easy reference. To me, The Nam Wah is distinctly different. However, I have done research about Var. "Florida" and AEAE in the past. I never came to a definitive conclusion, but from what I gathered from older threads is that AEAE is different from Var. "Florida" only in that Musa Var. "Florida" bears seeded fruit. I noticed that pictures of plants sold as Var. "Florida" always have the pink variegation. I came up with a theory that the AEAE's with pink might actually be Var. "Florida" that have been mistakenly sold under the wrong name. I hope that I am wrong.

I counted 7 pups that you could take up and have very strong plants, that is if it was June or July. And if you cut off the flower stem (that is if they bloom) all of the 7 would have fruit by next September. Congratulation on making Ae Ae bananas look easy.

Harvey,
The fruit will be cut down and so will the plant.I think the Ae Ae is the best cooking plantain. Its has a very sweet flavor compared to no flavor from the others I have tried.

No...corms were not replanted.Although, they still produced a few more pups during its stay in the compost pile.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=29604&size=1
Looking at all these new Ae Ae threads that are going around,I decided to do some homework and review the "project".As I looked for something I might of missed,I noticed my Ae Ae were in some really cold weather that year ....low 30's for days and were still very young and they did great.
Ae Ae are strong,I even consider them more cold tolerant than some of the more common varieties that are more popular. That being said,The soil has to have the right conditions for the roots and corm to be healthy.
I only have 1 Ae Ae right now because I quit growing bananas for personal reasons but I am slowing getting back into things.Growing Roses in Miami is my new challenge for now lol!
Many things have changed in this forum, many new faces and many old ones gone.Hope to see those old ones come back again...lots of knowledge has been lost with those that have left.
Happy Holidays and a Happy upcoming New Year to all

Good to hear from you again Greenie! Mine eventually died but we got below 30F here. But our summer evenings would regularly get down into the 60s at night and this seemed to almost stop them from growing. When we would have hot spells and nights stayed in the mid-70s, they seemed to be much happier, but those periods were not frequent enough. Can't justify running a heater in the summer for them! LOL

Great, thanks for the update! We (contractor) are renovating our 1927 Bungalow (after living here for 25 years)...so it has been a little crazy. Ele Ele is doing great and has been shared with so many other members of Bananas.org including the California member that moved to Hawaii...lol.
Sadly our Ae Ae died....strange...it had two pups that shriveled up and died....then the mother plant died....not sure what it was.....new (tree service) mulch added or drought and too much rain. Ae Ae's are tough to grow.
House project has been over whelming. Life has been good so far!

this is what we achieved using the formula for strong healthy plants
root growth was a priority!
I am most probably going to get this going again with maybe the same variety or a completely new one....lets see
Dug out the Ae Ae pups today, there were 20 of them! I only killed 1 and was able to pot up 18. The corm was the healthiest, most rooted , that I've ever seen. Of course I kept the biggest pup for myself, here's some updated pics;
