Eric, that's the provincial bird of the Galapagos - a Blue Footed Booby. His name's Pancho. What the "Are you lookin' at me?" photo doesn't show is a long, wicked sharp bill. I was kind of scared to get any closer to him than about 5 feet away. Which is still a lot closer than I've been to most large seabirds, except when I was divebombed by a Frigate in Manta.

It's the trunk of a Ceiba tree - C. pentandra to be exact. Those are perfectly normal thorns, which the tree gradually sheds as it ages. That tree is about 50 years old; by age 100 or so it will be smooth, and by age 300 or so it will be in excess of 300 feet tall.

I figured it was the trunk of a tree but thought it was some kind of fungus growing on the trunk...nice pic I still don't know what Tony's pic is of though (?).

Kapok Tree....see these on occasion in Florida and definitely in the Caribbean.
