Don't try this at home!!
This move was acomplished by someone with no regard for his own safety
And no knowledge of anything restricting his ability to do this
There was a safety rope & safety blocks holding it in/down all the time
The only .....uh oh... moment was when it reached the top of the ramp & the tipping point.
After it was on the roof I then had to remove the rope keeping it from sliding down the ramp
And move it to keep the cupola from sliding down the roof
Then push it about 4' to the side
I need to build the mounting base at the peak - then up it goes

The tipping point

I did have a steel cable /winch on it the entire time until it was on the roof
So partly the winch pulling it up, partly me manuevering it up the ramp
I sort of "walked" it up the ramp pushing on each side - then nailing down blocking
Then push the other side...more blocking
Winch it tight
Repeat as needed

The winch was $75 well spent

I have SO many permits out
It was easier that way
Everything was approved under 1 Conservation permit - due to a stream on the property
They told me I then had ONLY 2 years to start everything
Anything NOT started would have to go back thru the Conservation approval process (about 5 months)

So I started everything in 2 years...2004 1 permit, 2005 another......2006 another - the foundation for the garage (rest under another permit in 08) 2007 another....2008 another
Then last year I found out I actually had 3 years to start everything
So the plan this year & next is to finish up most projects

Then start another one - Kitchen remodel

Yeah, all those inflatable things are pretty creepy, IMO. I wouldn't want them in my YARD...definitely not way up on top of my house! EEK!

Another "quick" update
Replace/rebuild the bay window & installed new windows
I built the new bay window area beyond the existing one
Started last Sat, lousy weather, cold - but the roofs on & insulated

Old setup w/new joists installed

New...underneath will be lattice for trash barrels
The big window is 4x4 & top trim matches the front window

Dave just for the sake of clarity. a bay window that is not supported on a bottom floor foundation is called an Orel. So what you had on the side of your home is called an Orel not a Bay. Orel's are supported on cantilevered joist or as was the case in your home a buttress.

By the way spectacular job. looks nice the cantilevered joist are stronger then the buttresses. they spread the stress of the weight out over a larger more stable area the Floor in this case. which in turn transfers the stress in to the two main parallel walls. where as the Buttress rely on the weight being carried by the single vertical outer wall. which over time will sag outward weakening the entire wall as well as the Headers that carry the load of the roof. this is the primary reason you don't see them used much any more that and there just out of stile.
Stylistically there is a romantic charm to Buttressed Orel's that the Cantilevered versions do not seem to poses this is just my opinion

More work on the house completed
A nice week so I worked on the front of the house
New small side wall, new 1/2 wall on the front - both for more insulation
Took apart the bedroom wall from the outside & added insulation
So now between R13 and R32 for insulation along most of the front of the house

I have some more trim to do around the windows then I can finish the front up & start on the front porch
Top triangle will wait until probably last -that will be shingles w/rounded bottoms
