Default Tiny vegetative nubs

Because a'ea'e are difficult to successfully root without rotting and because these white a'ea'e will eventually die, it makes them a great candidate for practicing rooting vegetative offshoots.

Always a happy morning to see a new sprout. Especially when it's a Manini.

Yeah, the first thing I look at is the shade of the pink. If it's too light it's gonna be a whitey and I might as well toss it now and use the vacancy for another banana.

That's a nice tip, on the coloring. I had always tried to save all my Manini pups but of course was not successful in some cases. Have always wanted to try another but after buying 3 different times over 3 years (many years ago) and being very successful growing them out and multiplying them, I would eventually lose them all to rot. I did not know then what I have learned, on here, since. I will one day try another.

How often did you clean their rhizome?

Rhizome rot is usually just a maintenance issue, kinda like going to the dentist.

Mitigate & Maintenance.

I would never clean the rhizome unless I found rot which was usually after the plant got into trouble. I treated them just the same as all my other all green banana types which hardly ever gave me a rot problem. I was even successful growing AeAe into large fruiting size ,in ground, (but not maturing the fruit) but once winter came I would dig the plant and sprouts up before frost and put them inside a greenhouse where I was fairly successful at rooting them but eventually the numbers would drop until I lost them all. I learned on this discussion board from your posts what was happening. I never used regular maintenance of the corms though. Wish I had known. What is your regular maintenance program?

What exactly do you mean by a vegetative offshoot, it is just a pup cut off from the main plant?

I’ve had the same issue with AEAE. They’d grow really well and then randomly die from rot. Learned to just ignore them and they did much better. The last two that died, were fine until I had to move them due to work on my house. They didn’t like being moved and slowly faded out. I’d like to try again at some point as well.

For people growing in areas where the plant can naturally grow faster than it rots, nothing really needs to be done. For growers where rhizome rot is an issue the simplest solution is to keep the rot as far away from the primary meristem as possible. And because moving the meristem is so simple everyone should be able to produce perfect rhizomes without any rot.

I learned to do it because my wholesale distributors wanted perfect rhizomes.

I really enjoy propagating this variety and at some point I'd like to get back into the retail market.
