Very nice growth, especially for a shipped and recovered variegate. Good on PR-Giants and yourself for keeping these rare plants going. Is it a AeAe or Florida? Did you use PR-Giants sand mix or other? Thanks for your reply.

Its not the same substrate, its lechuza basicpon. I have drainage holes and a screen at the bottom so it doesn’t fall out. I water after bottom half inch or so looks dried out, which is about every other day. I also add a couple drops of schultz all purpose liquid plant food at every watering. |

Thanks for the tips on your methods. Had to look up lechuza basicpon. The price on line was around $14.00 but it looks like good stuff. I will look for a close supplier but have never seen it before. If I don't find one near I will order some to evaluate against Turface MVP which is what I am trying. I just recently started using Turface MVP which is a high temp baked calcined clay product that seems to have some of the same properties as Pon but is much cheaper. It cost me about $18.00 for a "too large to ship on UPS" 50 pound bag. My guesstimate is it is about 10 times the amount of product than in the Pon bags, but that is a guess. Basically it looks like tiny pieces of the old standard red clay nursery pots broken up. It supposed to have micro pores and both holds air and water and so microlife. Water pours right through it. Tons of air space. I am trying a Siam Ruby banana which seems to be about as fussy as an AeAe for me. Will be trying it "as is" and mixed with various other amendments. Hope it works well so I can try to find an AeAe and a Florida to try as I lost mine after many years.

That's looking nice.
What have you learned since losing your first Florida to now?

Substrate matters, roots need to breathe moreso than i thought. The soil I used before was labeled a well draining soil but even that may not have been enough. Overwatering hard to do when the substrate drains well enough. Also florida dont seem to like the cold very much. Need to do a better job in the winter. Probably ignore it a bit more then giving it water every month or so. Last winter it actually rained a decent amount so pretty sure overwatering is what caused me to lose it.

The first variegated banana I received was a rotting mess of a rhizome and lucky for me because of my experience during the 1960's of using Clean Coarse River Sand for our hydroponics it was quick and easy for me to save that plant. It's not uncommon for people to kill a few as they learn the importance of soil aeration.

Very nice looking Florida. Have you been keeping it in a lot of shade? I ask because it has no burned white areas except the two oldest leaves, which is expected. In my case, I found that dappled shade was best to prevent that.

Its inside under grow lights / close to the window most of the time with occasional morning sun like it got today. Will deff need a shady spot when planted.

Beautiful pup! Have you named this one? "Wild Beauty" sounds like a good name if you have not named it. If it is for sale I am interested.

Another beauty! Did you do a cross to get the mothers or are they from wild sprouted seed on your farm? Did the mothers look like the pups?

I posted those photos last Saturday and both of them sold quickly but if you want some variegated banana pups send a PM with your zip code and which plants you're looking for.

Yes, the mothers are just as beautiful as their pups and their mothers were wild. I don't keep track of any information on crosses with wild mothers for obvious reasons.
