I have a dwarf cavendish that I purchased at a local grocer. I am certain they were over watering it and that the pot was much too small.

My neophyte standing in the world of bananas keeps me asking questions that may be simple and obvious to others...I guess that is how I often learn.

The leaves seem to be crowding, to me. New leaves are coming out and trying to open before others have opened all the way. None of my other bananas have done this.

Is this common? Normal? If not, is there something that I can do about it?

What is the chance of bunchy top virus on a banana that more than likely started as tc and came from a greenhouse in slc utah?

I don't really know anything about it, other that what was in Scot's dvd. However, I would not think there would be much prevalence if any here.

If it is bunchy top virus...can it be transmitted to my other nanas here? I wouldn't think that we have the proper vectors for such here..But as I have said, I am very new to this.

Looks like super dwarf to me. I have a few banana plants doing the same thing.Two leaves growing out at the same time.I don't think it is a virus .

BBTV is transmitted by aphids. I seriously doubt that is the issue. In fact, I'm not really sure you even have an issue. Your banana looks like one of the Cavendish types, such as 'Super Dwarf Cavendish', 'Little Prince', or 'Truly Tiny'. The way you see the leaves growing is just sort of how these tend to grow sometimes. I see you did state that it is a 'Dwarf Cavendish'.

Another possibility is that it was underpotted for too long, became rootbound and was in serious need of a bigger pot and fertilizer when you bought it and it just hasn't quite come out of it's "funK" yet. Give it time and I think it will be fine.

Thanks all. I am quite certain it was root bound. At least I don't see how a plant that big (2 1/2" diameter base of pstem) can survive properly in a 6" pot, as they had it. Also, I am certain it was over watered. This is the first banana that I have 'rescued'

The pot didn't state which cultivar it is. I don't think that the florist at the grocery store even knew it was a banana. I called the greenhouse that supplies the store with all their plants. When I spoke to the banana man there, he assured me that it is a dc not a sdc or any other.

I guess time will tell all. I have only had it repotted a few days. I haven't fed it yet but may today. I potted 6 others the same day..all tcs..various cultivars, they have all put out new leaves already..less than a week since they were all potted.

It isn't bunchy-top. It has probabaly had some stress, growth slowed, and if you treat it well, it will be fine.

Several of my bananas did the same thing earlier in the year. Now they are producing leaves like normal. I don't think there is anything to worry about.
