Re: Hello

So what plants are you pushing aside from bananas? Here in SE PA my 'indestructible' Basjoo gave out after about 12 years and much abuse. At one point it recovered although, when I tried to move it...

Re: Passion Fruit Advice Wanted

The two sources with which I am most familiar are Logees and Georgia Vines. I can't give advice on fruit since the only passiflora I have fruited are weeds, but both companies have tempting catalogs....

Re: I am now a PhD

Congratulations from someone who did it 43 years ago. I'm imagining that it is as difficult and frustrating now as it was then.

Re: School Wants Banana Plant for Greenhouse

I couldn't figure out exactly where you are located, but Logees in Danielson CT might be fairly close, though they do have a large mail order business. They have a half-dozen varieties in stock and...

Re: Outside Basjoo - when did your corms start growing this year?

I think mid or late May in West Chester. I assumed that I had lost it and put in a new one, but the old one caught up.

Re: Who's growing...

Luffa. I did rather badly on these until last summer. I planted the seeds in the ground in a small area where I grow squash and, I wish, edible gourds and I let them climb on a lattice. The Luffas...

Re: Dawn redwoods

I love the plant. I planted two about 15 years ago when we inadvertently killed an old oak by enlarging our driveway. The Metasequoia that replaced the oak in our front yard is now a magnificent...

Re: questions for usa forum members

I had hoped to move to southern Dade County when I retired, but my wife was never interested. I think that she was worried about the weather, though Florida has lately been spared major hurricanes....

Re: Shazam! 32F in the Dirty South!

Last winter I did nothing (no cutting) but dumped more greenhouse waste on them. I thought that I had lost them because of the cold winter (which did seem to discourage fruiting on my tender kiwis),...

Re: Expanding what I am growing

Unlike most cucurbits it seems to be a pretty good indoor plant. It fruited and competed with my passionflower in my greenhouse. Unfortunately, I do not know what cultivar the passionflower is. It...

Inverewe Gardens in Scotland has bananas according to an article in the Christian Science monitor. I tried to visit it about 10 years ago but it was closed due to storm damage. If you google...

Re: Expanding what I am growing

Melothria scabra also seems to leave its seeds in the ground to come up next year. I had about 20 fruits from a few plants that seemed to come up spontaneously.

Re: My first year basjoo!

As I have noted, my basjoos survive well under a pile of greenhouse trash here in West Chester, PA. However, I don't expect them to fruit. If you are looking for a real thrill, try 'tender' kiwis....

Re: Who's growing Rosmarinus officinalis ?

The so-called hardy cultivars of rosemary aren't very. In SE Pennsylvania Bay Laurel, which isn't supposed to be as hardy, not to mention 'tender' kiwis, and Musa Basjoo usually do better than...

Re: Who's growing mulberry ?

We have had mulberry trees for the last 30 years. Our best is a Romanian black mulberry tree bought from edible landscaping. Many people find white mulberries insipid, but the best mulberries that I...

Re: Nipple Fruit - Solanum mammosum

I grew it in Pennsylvania maybe 10 years ago. It has the same culture as an eggplant and the plant is rather unpleasantly prickly.

It's nice to hear from a fellow Pennsylvanian in the last post. I have a few hardy kiwis myself and got a small amount of delicious fruit from them. I also have had 'tender' kiwis for almost 20 years...
