Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannaensis is a different taxon than Mekong Giant which is an invalid name.

In our botanic garden all Musa hybridizations have been done in controlled conditions in our greenhouses so we definitely know what are the parent plants.

Musa laterita has female basal flowers. It is easy to cross with Musa acuminata in both ways. I used to made those crossings some ten years ago.

Musa hirta is not edible. Full of seeds and flesh not so tasty. I have studied it in Central Sarawak and Kalimantan in Borneo.

During the 5-weeks mission one can't search the every corner of the country as Vietnam is huge country. However, we travelled from the very north (China border) to very south (Cambodia border)....

The photo in the seed list of M.beccarii is wrong. It is M.ornata hybrid which is rather common. The true M.beccarii you can see in my avatar.

It is not so easy to find var. xishuangbanna materials unles one is going to Xishuangbanna Yunnan. Secondly they grow in far distances in the nature reserve forests.

There is the type of M.ochracea with the photos at Kew. The wax is not a key for analysing the species. Many species are either waxles or waxy depending o growing area and elevation.
