Re: What is the *smallest* container you've ever gotten a banana to fruit in?

I know this thread is a year old, but I wanted to note that I had a similar metal pail (about half the size of the one pictured) from Home Depot, and the bottom rusted out after a few years...used it...

Re: Spider Mites?

I'm curious if anyone, in this discussion, has actually looked with a handheld led microscope (10x-15x) to see if these are really spider mites. You need to be able to see how many eggs there are....

Re: bringing the plants inside for winter

In the last picture, the stem still looks green. I wonder if the black/deadish leaves might have some insulation value, perhaps wrapping them around the green stem...

Re: Building/buying a container for a dwarf namwah?

Look for pot grower supply stores in your area, they're sometimes called hydroponic stores. The ones in my area, Los Angeles, usually have larger plastic pots in stock or are happy to order what you...

Re: Temperaturewise, when to move banana plants outdoors?

When I've planted bananas outside, they've been in 4'x4' raised boxes with 24" sides. The soil here is sandy silt/silty sand, and no one would ever accuse it of holding moisture for very long. I'm...

Re: Temperaturewise, when to move banana plants outdoors?

Could you tell me how cold (and for how long) you get in the winter? And do the in ground bananas get rained on, or watered, during the winter?

I've had a few in ground bananas survive the winter...

Re: Temperaturewise, when to move banana plants outdoors?

Do you leave them in the ground for the winter, or dig them up? And do you ever measure the ground temperature?

I've been bringing my containered ones inside when the night temps start getting...

Re: Best potting mix for containers

Aruzinsky, since you're paying attention to these things, have you considered the amount of arsenic present in rice (hulls, especially).

Re: dwarf namwah grow report in COLD Northern California

I'm also surprised by my bad luck, especially after reading about meizzwang's groove that survives long spells of cold wet weather. It's warmer down here (Los Angeles area) during the daytime...

Re: dwarf namwah grow report in COLD Northern California

I know it's a year later, but I'm curious to know how the "not namwah" fared after a winter of cold and rain. I'm in S. Calif, a 9b zone where it gets down to 24-28F a few times each winter. I've...

how to encourage pupping

Is there a way to encourage a banana plant to pup, or is it strictly a genetic limitation in certain varieties?

Anita, I'm really interested in your papaya growing technique. How large a container are you using and can you say how thick the landscape fabric is around the inside of the container? Does this...

Re: fruit in container

Have you checked the banana roots in a laundry basket with landscape fabric...does it prevent them from circling? I wonder if 3 or 4 layers of landscape fabric might have an air pruning effect...

I'd like to know more about this idea. Does the weed fabric keep the roots from circling, does it promote air pruning inside the plastic laundry basket? Are you using layers of weed fabric or just...

Re: Anyone have a dwarf papuya tree?

I think that would eliminate the Hawaiian Solo (Sunset and Sunrise) variety. Take a look at the photos on this papaya seed selling website, see if anything looks familiar.

Re: Anyone have a dwarf papuya tree?

If you can call the nursery, you might try to find out what the fruit looked like that the seeds came from. Round, long, thin, fat, all of those could give a clue as to the variety...or at least...

Re: Anyone have a dwarf papuya tree?

Assuming that's a plant and not a 4 foot long fruit, that's more like it...you've saved yourself about a year's worth of watching it grow. Was that from a nursery or private party?

Re: Anyone have a dwarf papuya tree?

I'm not sure why home grown papaya seeds would be any different than farm grown, or university grown...as far as growing true.

The U of Hawaii seeds are the best deal in town. Instead of $5-7 for 5...

Re: Thai Plumeria Seedling

Thanks, I didn't think about that. All the auctions I saw were from Thailand and I assumed that's just how things were.

But is it illegal to buy seeds from overseas?
