Re: bananas in MN
I am interested in your questions as well. I am in western South Dakota. Zone 5a. The coldest temp I've seen here was -14 for a few hours, then back up to -5 to around zero for a few days.
All the...

Re: The correct hardiness of Musa basjoo
Could you describe "alot of protection"??
Curious... I haven't tried to overwinter since my first failure with a small plant years ago.
Can you describe the protection, size of plant,...

Re: Fruits and disease?
I have a photo on my cellphone. I just need to find the wire thingy that I used to transfer photos to my computer. I used it once, and forgot where it went to.
The banana was about 4" long or so,...

Fruits and disease?
A friend just brought some wild seeded unripe banana fruit back from Hawaii. Before I bring these into my home, I'm wondering if I might inadvertantly also introduce a disease to my plants. If so,...

Re: OK, so I've got mites on my indoor basjoo
You could always use a systemic inseciticide on your Basjoo. If you don't eat the fruit, you won't have a problem. A little will kill the fungus gnats, larvae, and any spider mites you might have....

Re: ensete maurelii red-creating pups
I'd say you are about to have a LOT of Maurelii's. Good luck with separating them. BTW the plant you sent me last spring is now about 5' tall. Much, much more vigorous than any of the Musa I have....

Re: ensete maurelii red-creating pups
I wonder how big you could let a Maurelii get before trying this forced pupping method?
Would the Ensete pup if it were done just as the flower emerges?
Curious.

Re: Variegated Basjoo!!?
Could this be something special? I don't know really.
It looks more like an AeAe right now than anything else I've seen. A pic right now would not be too impressive since it only has it's first...

Variegated Basjoo!!?
I planted out a Basjoo that I picked up at a local nursery last fall. It's growing a pup now with variegated first three leafs. Bright white stripe in each from tip to petiole with green. I will post...

Re: why did my sikkis rot.
Right. I agree. I'd rather have a vigorous grower. The leaf color would just be a bonus really. I wouln't trade leaf color/variegation for vigor either.
What do you know about the giant Sikkis?...

Re: why did my sikkis rot.
What do you mean by "rubbish plant"? Do you mean rubbish as in garbage, or waste? Something that should be thrown out or not worth keeping? If so, then why? Some English phrases don't translate...

Re: She's sick, but I'd like to know what she is..
The first thing you should do is get rid of the spider mites. Then start misting the leaves with cool water on top and bottom of the leaves. Keep your watering down until you can move it back outside...

Re: Bananas getting sick?
I think I'll wait until the soil warms a bit in my zone 5 before I plant mine out. Basjoos are not so hardy when they're so small. Especially when the soil is cold.

Re: Castor Bean (Ricinus Communis) For Trade!!
Castor plants help keep the deer out of my yard. I plant Daturas also, and they work wonders when mixed in with other "edible" plants. I haven't had much problem with ravenous deer for a couple of...
