Re: Too much or too little water?

To nph: Try letting the hose run slowly on the bananas real slowly all day. This slow drizzle is good at letting water seep in and get deep into the soil. It's also effortless, just put it there and...

Re: slow growth

Are the entire mats growing slowly? I have the same problem with some of my bananas, where the previous year's stalk gets killed back and comes back slowly. These stalks usually grow a handful of...

Re: How late to dig up Pups?

I agree that you should wait before separating. If you wait til after your trip, then you would still have 6-10 weeks of good weather for the pups and the parent to recover. The longer you wait, the...

Re: Most Common Banana In North America...

Ice cream grew about twice as fast as my orinoco in the 1st year. Orinocos seem to transplant more easily in my experience, which may explain their dominance.

Re: Orincco Bananas

I had this happen to me this spring. Every time i would cut the stems, it would just rot away after a day or 2. Luckily every stem that died produced 2 pups and now they're getting huge!

Stem Cutting

Say you have two bananas both 10' tall and equally healthy, same type etc etc... Winter comes along and they're killed to about 5 feet of trunk. If you cut one to the ground and the other to the the...

Re: Too small to leave out?

I agree with Dablo- pot 'em up fot the winter, but you could leave 1 or 2 out just to see how they do. That way, if they make it, (or don't) you'll have a better guesstimate of how big and...

Re: yuk... the cold nights start tonight

We got a predicted low of 48 thursday night... 60s and 80s are nice, but this dry air is really bad for the aloe plants. Old man winter's on his way:0519:

Re: Dwarf Cavendish

Iv'e never overwintered a banana indoors, but as far as pups go, 1-2ft should be plenty. Go with a sword-leaved pup if you can wait (unlike me :ha:)

Re: Just took some pics...

Great Yard Randy! I'm wondering what kind of plant that is at 59 and 60. My neighbor has a large tree of that and it's puzzled me for months. Nice lush yard, keep up the great work!

Mine's pretty straightforward. My Dad's parents are from Wisconsin, home of a lot of dairy cows. Not to mention a friend of mine who owns a local beef ranch. Moo's come to be my standard name on any...
