I can tell you what they are used for, they are used in jewelery as they are nice round sized nuts that look quite nice when coated in a laquer, another use or so i was told when we visited Hawaii...

just as porkpi i also use pallets, but i run a 3 year cycle. first bin is all the fresh stuff which i let sit all summer, and then next spring i move it to the next pallet, and then the next spring...
