Re: What type of blade do you use?

I have a lot of bananas and am a danger to myself with a machete. Small woman, big bananas. After dulling serrated Corona pruning saws in less than a year to the point where they became almost...

Re: Cardboard/newspaper compost?

Cardboard works wonders! If you have any slope be sure to layer it so that rain water will flow underneath. Think of reverse roof tiles.
If you are in a rainy area, thick layers of newspaper may...

Re: Kru taste report

Rob was generous and passed along some Kru fruit to me, so here are my observations.

The Kru fruit were harvested on the early side, and seemed not fully filled out. The Encanto farms write-up on...

Re: Rose Taste Report

Lucky me got to have a hand of them! Although I much prefer tartness in bananas, they were good! Quite addictive due to a tantalizing taste that I couldn't quite identify. Rose is definitely one...

Re: Jelled nectar- who has it?

Back to the thread topic!
What my question should have been-
Is jelled nectar uncommon and thus a useful identification trait?
If so, which cultivars have it?

Re: Jelled nectar- who has it?

My vet said the vaccine for dogs does not cover all the stains we have in Hawaii. Apparently "lepto" is not as widespread here, although certainly present and something to be aware of.

Re: Do you think this would work on Banana's?

Baking soda, dilute solution or diluted milk do wonders for powdery mildew, as well as other fungal funk. Serenade also a favorite.

Re: Definative Days to Harvest list?

Namwahs keep growing in the cool, nice observation. Will watch for similar patterns here, as this part of the coast is a few degrees cooler than most.

Wow!!! Does it!, and astonishing that you...

Re: Definative Days to Harvest list?

Now that is very interesting and unexpected! Any theories as to why it might be? I'd have expected that the varieties would be equally affected by climatic conditions as their genetics are probably...

Re: Definative Days to Harvest list?

Yes! But there are quite a few cultivars that many of us grow which are not listed. Or at least that I don't know by those names. There is so much to know about bananas, I'm still learning from...

Re: Definative Days to Harvest list?

Re: Definative Days to Harvest list?

Thank you Mark! That is a great start!
Kinda funny with all of us banana obsessed folks that someone hasn't put together the definitive list, bearing in mind that your results may vary.

Re: Banana Plantation Update

In this part of the island, every mat is closely watched. Unless you see yellow bananas eaten by rats, someone considers the bananas "theirs". Some do no more than harvest, others fertilize etc. ...

Re: What's w/ the hard Center in my Banana?
