Re: Thought on self watering planters (SIP) Yes – No?

Your picture looks nice, but I think the banana roots willl grow into the PVC pipe and clog it up. I agree with Cinci - a water saucer on the bottom is a good solution.

Re: Viente Cohol vs Patupi/Kokopo for Zone 6b or 5a Patio Plant for Fruiting

I think any type is worth trying and plants are relatively cheap compared to other hobbies. I recall that Sandy (on this forum) fruited a Saba plant in SE Pennsylvania a few years ago.

I'd...

Re: Viente Cohol vs Patupi/Kokopo for Zone 6b or 5a Patio Plant for Fruiting

The Veinte cohol grows easier and bigger for me. The patupi produced more edible fruit. I kept both in 15 gallon pots. Timing is key - you need a flower to emerge about 2 months before the cool...

Re: Viente Cohol vs Patupi/Kokopo for Zone 6b or 5a Patio Plant for Fruiting

HI Petey

I grew both of these in Pennsylvania. I'd say you can expect fruit in 3 to 4 years for your growing conditions. Your plants will lose leaves twice a year when taken inside and then back...

Re: Half 55 Ga Water Barrel

Thats a good point! I have had full size plants tip over in the pots after heavy rains and winds usually during the fall when they are full size. If I feel a banana may reach full size during the...

Re: Half 55 Ga Water Barrel

Hi Valor,

I think that is adequate. I am doing the same with a 55 gal barrel which is equivalent to some pots that I've used for fruiting orinoco and patupi.

The only problem is there isn't...

Re: Veinte Cohol Fruit in Pennsylvania

Thanks! It looks like I have one more week of "not so cold" overnight temps so my bunch is still hanging on outside. Last winter, I kept the plant indoors in a 15gal pot (it was 5' tall). I bent...

Re: Veinte Cohol Fruit in Pennsylvania

Thanks all!

Mary I wish you luck on that goal in OH.

My key to success has been to figure out the timing of the plant. The growing season in my area (zone 6) is too short for a plant to develop...

Re: Veinte Cohol Fruit in Pennsylvania

Thanks!

The pot is about 20-25 gallons and is 30" diameter at the top and much smaller at the bottom. I half-buried the pot in the ground to prevent the wind from blowing it over.
