Re: Fhia18?

Thanks! Yeah, it just hit 32 degrees in that part of the yard, so not a super hard freeze, but it was totally unaffected while other supposedly very cold hardy ones (including Dwarf Brazilian) lost...

Re: Wanted - Producing variety for zone 10 San Diego

I've got a few Pisang Ceylon/Improved Mysore pups if you're still looking. Very tasty fruit on fast growing and relatively cold hardy plants.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

That's the mat I dug your pup off of! It's already had 3 bunches this year with 2 more hanging now. Treat these things right and they can be insanely productive.

Re: Fhia18?

Bump to add a quick taste report:

The fruit are best when mostly yellow with some green remaining on both ends. The flavor at this stage is like a good homegrown Cavendish with an additional acidic...

Re: What are the best tasting banana varieties to you?

Orinoco types are great in that you can pretty much set them and forget them. You see them growing "wild" and fruiting like crazy all over Central and even North Florida where it gets well below...

Fhia18?

Hi all, looking to get a confirmation on whether I've got an FHIA18 here. It seems to match many of the type's supposed characteristics but there aren't too many pictures that I've been able to find...

Re: Seeds From Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas

If this offer is on the table for other members I would love to get a Variegated Florida to hand pollinate. I've been growing bananas for a while now and am kinda looking for a way to spice things up...

Re: Beware of Rip Offs from Members

Just to maybe add a bit of info to this thread...Aaron and I made a trade last summer (I believe I gave him a Pisang Ceylon in exchange for the supposed GM Highgate). I knew the Highgate hadn't...

Re: Gros Michel fruiting in Central Florida

Absolutely, although I don't have any at the moment unfortunately. If you can't find someone on here with one you can check back with me in another month or so, I'll probably get one by then!

Re: Where is everyone at? Share some pics

Looks great Valor!

While most of my citrus trees died completely or mostly stopped producing due to Citrus Greening, my Meyer lemon tree has remained wildly productive for like a decade HLB+. It...

Re: Kokopo/Patupi flavor?

I just had my first bunch a couple months back. They are really good, probably my favorite that I've tried.

The flavor is subtle and complex. I noted at the time that across different fruits and...

Re: Bananas that can take frost that you can eat

Welcome! There are plenty of edible bananas that will do quite well. Just from my experience, Orinoco, Namwah, Brazilian, FHIA3, FHIA18, and SH3640 all handle cold nicely.

You will have to accept...

Re: Seedlings from a variegated A'ea'e bunch

I'm not too familiar with the process of growing bananas from seed. If the seedling survives to produce a bunch how often does a cross make seedless fruit?

Perhaps I'm mistaken but it's pretty...

Re: How do I expand my collection?

That's super interesting about the Veinte Cohol, they are not known to like the cold at all. But honestly, I sorta tend to forget that "cold hardiness" really encompasses several different factors. I...

Re: How do I expand my collection?

Dwarf Brazilian is a good all-rounder for Florida. Cold hardy, stout, fast grower, requires almost no maintenance, good flavor when nicely ripe.

Everyone who has tried Patupi seems to really love...

Re: Goldfinger or Pisang Awak - is leaf blotching a clue?

Goldfinger. Looks exactly like the suckers off of mine. And from my experience, Pisang Awak types don't get wine stains on their leaves.

Variegated Blue Java

My little plant popped out a leaf with some yellow and white variegation.

I hope I'm correct in thinking it is, in fact, variegation and not the symptom of some sort of disease or nutrient...
