Re: Musa Basjoo Problems

Varies. I've tried all different depths. Ground level, few inches deeper and 12 inches deeper. They suffer the same eventual fate... but only in that area.

Like I said other bananas have done...

About March 1st, I bring them up, cut off the dried up tissue and pot them up. Give them a...

Re: First winter with new greenhouse and banana question

Greenfin,

Wow. All I have to say is thank you. Man, I was figuring since the sun was shining, each hour of "light" was equal. Not the case, I see. Makes sense ... even if it's warm this time of...

First winter with new greenhouse and banana question

I built this greenhouse over the summer. I'm keeping palm seedlings, citrus, other tropicals and bananas in it over the winter. In the fall, when I dug up the bananas, I split the large pups off...

Sick Musa Basjoo

This past week one of my musa basjoo started looking sick. The newest roller that was pushing up has slowly browned out from the edges in. It also has stopped pushing up. I fertilize these bananas...

Re: Tropical Ohio

It was planted as a 3 gallon in July of 2008.

I place an insulated box over it every winter from around Thanksgiving until early March. This box is 2x2 wood frame, plastic inside and outside of the...

Angie,

Greetings from Wisconsin! I'm just north of Milwaukee and just west of the big pond. This is my second year growing ensete maurelii and I would recommend throwing yours right into the...

Re: What's up with these ensetes?

Hmmm. Here is how they look today. I had to cut the old petioles further down again due to them turning brown and mushy. The rest of the old petioles are lime green and sickly colored. Despite...

Question What's up with these ensetes?

These grew great for me last summer, reaching four feet by October from seedlings. Grew them under grow lights in the basement from October til April and they grew slow, but steady. Planted them...

Here are some pictures I snapped of some of my bananas today. They were placed in the ground a few weeks ago and cut flush at the cut marks you see. The growth represents all growth since then. ...

Re: Hmm... what's up with this?

What are your day and night temperatures like and how are they growing in weather like that? Sounds like my weather here.

Re: Hmm... what's up with this?

Interesting. Well, they needed to get out of my basement, so in the ground they go. Next week should rebound to the 50s at least during the day. If that kills them, then they are weak. Soil temp...

Hmm... what's up with this?

Looks like my ensete is trying to push multiple leaves out at once? Just put it outside from winter storage under grow lights in the basement. Hope it corrects itself. What do you all think.......

Re: Finished my beds... (well almost)

Bob,

My lawn is a mixture of Penncross creeping bent grass and A-4 bent grass. Mowed at 1/2 inch every other day. :) It's tedious to keep up, but worth it. As for mulch, it's just the black...

Re: are they safe to go out?

Go for it. I'm in zone 5b and I planted all my stuff out this past weekend. Weird your last frost date is so late. Ours is April 26th here, but I'm 2 miles from Lake Michigan so that may help...

Finished my beds... (well almost)

Did some more planting this weekend as it was sunny and in the 50s. A welcome change from last week's snow disaster.

Overall shot of the yard. Notice all the bananas are in the ground now.
