Re: Tropical Ohio
Wow that is beautiful! Ok, I live in NE Ohio right on the 5a/5b border. I would absolutely love to do this around my pool. All I have right now are Bajoos which are doing great. Questions for you:
Aside from the basjoo, are all of those plants cold weather variety or do you have to overwinter them inside? How old are all of those? Do you cut your bananas to the ground and mulch with 6" or do you leave a 2-3 foot pseudo stem and protect some other way? Do you have any experience with cold weather palms in Ohio? Do you fertilize much? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Tropical Ohio
Thanks everybody for the nice comments....we still have at least 2 and a half months of growing season too! I can't wait to see how everything looks at the end of the year...I'll try to update it as they progress.
Pyro: 1-yes I dig and store most of them in my basement. If my Mekong giant pups I will save a pup and try to protect the pstem and see if they'll make it here. The elephant ears were easy to store as well some I potted and some were stored dormant. 2-The basjoo is 3 or 4 years old the ice cream is 3 and the ensure is 3 the Thailand and Borneo giants are a year and a half and the Mekong I got this spring from sandy. 3-I cut mine to about 16" and pile up mulch around them and put a styrofoam rose cone on top. This year I'm doing the leaf cage method. I've used it before and it worked pretty good but my design was flawed or it would've worked better. 4-yes I have 2 windmill palms. Both are potted up I'm to scared to plant them in the ground. I grew one from a seed and the other a bought from someone 15 miles from me who has one over 9 feet tall and has been in the ground here in Ohio for over 12 years! I think next year one will go in the ground though. 5-yes I try to fertilize every week. I used banana fuel last year and it worked good but this year I'm just using Miracle grow 20-20-20 and ran out so now I'm using 30-10-10...I've used it before on basjoo's with success. If you have any more questions just let me know...I started with just a basjoo and now my girlfriend threatens me if I get any more plants...lol |

Re: Tropical Ohio
Thanks Nate. Great info. I just transplanted my basjoos a few days ago and they are already opening new leaves so I think they will do fine. I amended the soil to be exactly like what was in the pot they were in and tilled it in pretty deep so hopefully that will help. Early next year I think I will start trying some of the other varieties you have. I already have a windmill palm, sable minor and a pindo that I started last year but they have been growing pretty slowly. I don't even know if they will be big enough to put in the ground next year. I'll try to post some pics of the basjoos later. They have quite a few pups around each of them and I might try to split them before winter but I'll have to see if they're big enough. Thanks again.

Re: Tropical Ohio
It's not amazing as it should be, having one do well in Ohio, but I've never been able to get a Maurelli to grow worth a damn. Sweet yard though! Nice!

Re: Tropical Ohio
Stgawne,
Had to come back to your photo of your Maurelli to admire it. While doing so I think I spied a papyrus. Is it King Tut? If it is, it's one of the largest I've ever seen. Happy Gardening, Mike |

Re: Tropical Ohio
Yes that windmill is awesome! Let us know how you protect it. You've inspired me to plant mine this spring now...lol. I Like your tiki guy too I have a few through little my yard as well. I have no luck with maurelii every one I've had has died. By my regular ventricosum is doing great. I'm gonna have to update this thread soon they've grown a bunch in 2 weeks.
