Smile Re: What'cha got sprouting? (other plants)

Every year I start many square feet(in controlled containers) of different kinds of fern spores that I have either collected or purchased.

This is a photo of three different kinds of ferns in a 32 gal container under CFL OTT lights. Spores "sprout" at different times and circumstances and many of the spore take up to a year to "turn on", therefore I have a few shelves and many containers always in the process.
This container is a" grow out" container until they get some size.

The culling process begins......From millions to about 700.
Next step for these plants is 4 to a quart container/hot box in 60-+ days.

Plants shown are 4-6 inches tall.
I will either plant them in the stumpery or trade them out for daylillys or hostas.
Common names for this container of ferns are..
Giant Ostrich fern(The King) tallest brute reaching for the light.
Sensitive fern.wider heart shaped leaf
Ghost fern. smaller more defined leaf

Bought some chinese chestnuts to roast over Christmas but didn't eat them all so I threw them in a plant pot - 2 sprouted and one of them is already over 3" and growing quickly

Dates seem quite simple to get going. Soaked them in water for a while, then started them in a shallow tray of sphagnum moss and organic potting soil with mycorrhizae. No addition of heat either. Looks about time to move on into pots I guess.[/IMG]
Next up is a coconut? Dug through a pile of coconuts at the market, and found a nice heavy one with lots of water sloshing around inside. I may just eat it. Or try my hand at growing it, which is probably just another crazy idea

Lots of new weird sprouts coming up:

Pepino aka Melon Pear - Solanum muricatum
Vine Peach Melon - Cucumis melo "chito"
Ivy Gourd - Coccinia grandis
Black Sugar Cane - Saccharum officinarum......from what I've read sugar cane is supposed to be zone 8 so we'll see if I can get it to survive here. And expect for the vine peach, all the others should be able to be kept as houseplants during the winters

This probably doesn't count but I've been very lapse about where I dropped pepper seeds whilst carting the insides of red/green ones to the compost bin and now I see results of my carelessness in the most unexpected places--even where I know I did not lapse--no way you can mistake 8 pepper seedlings for an avocado start--except I did at 1st because I knew nothing else was in the pot. The ones I planted are up, onion sets (too late for bulbs so scallions) are up and a I finally saw a potato poking out of the ground.

Musa Basjoo pups are in the ground doing great.

And if you think mature Basjoos don't survive hard prune they do. I was going to throw out the pups parent because I over did the prune in Spring to the point where the whole plant keeled over in front of me.

So the plan was to destoy and recycle because I had the pups. Someone said cut it and wait and see, glad I did now because its sending out great rollers again.

Here's a new gardening blog on my amorphophallus titanums from the time they sprouted for an entire year. I don't have photos of their current size since almost all of them have been sold off to gardeners throughout the country, but do have some pictures of plants producing several petioles, getting up over 2ft in height with plum sized corms.

We spent a week in Davenport County Florida back in September. While there we visited a farmer's market and bought some fresh fruit, including mamey sapote - Pouteria sapota (it looked interesting so we decided to try it). We found the fruit enjoyable so I brought one of the seeds home (I know, I'm not supposed to do this) and stuck it in one of my large "nursery pots" .
It only took it about 2 weeks to decide to sprout and is now about 8" tall with 6 leaves......not sure what I'm going to do with it once it gets big

Hi,
I can germinate the papaya till it grows to 1 inch, then it dies. I do it the paper towel method. I then plant into pot.

Currently growing mangoes (Kent, Ataulfo, and T. Atkins), jalapeņos, and avocados (not seen here) from seed! Very exciting to give gardening a shot and having some successes.

I have a avocado that's started to sprout in less than 1 week, a mango that's just started to open, kumquat, lemon, passiflora, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, carrots, pak choi, baby broccoli. passiflora and tomatoes are outside in pots. rest planted in soil. I will take some pics and post them tomorrow.

Hi Tony, I have quite a few desert rose. I had 45 seeds and 43 sprouted in about 3 days. I also grow plumeria and just started the rooting real. I have rooted 8 cuttings and grown 3 from seeds. All are doing well. You should try plumeria as there quite a bit of information about them. The only thing I don'the like about desert rose is that they grow so slow, certainly not like bananas. Good luck to you with the desert rose. Should you have any questions relative to them, I'don't be happy to help.
Take care.
