Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
I have a couple of Cannas too, but they all have stiff upright flower stalks, but this one is much more graceful. Olaf

Scarlet Carpet Rose after -17C
Hi Emily,
I am a great fan of Carpet Roses and have planted over 40 of their various cultivars. All of them are disease and pest resistant and require little or no care. However there is a huge discrepancy in performance between the various cultivars. The ‘White’ ones are the earliest bloomers, followed by 'Apple Blossom' then ‘Pink’ and last my favourite, the 'Scarlet', opening about 2-3 weeks after the white ones. Their growth and size follows the same sequence, with the 'White' being the slowest and smallest and the 'Scarlet' the fastest and largest. The flower petals of the 'Scarlet' remained fresh and maintained their colour even during the hottest and driest windy days with temps at 37 to 39 (~100F), while the petals of all the others tended to fade a bit during those times. But here is, what really turns my crank: The picture below, taken today, shows a 'Scarlet (double)' which I have cut from the bush yesterday, after it had suffered temperatures ranging from -5C (23F) to -17C (2F). I waited for a day before shooting the photo, to make sure, that the flower won’t fold like a bad soufflé, when it thaws out. Now I am keeping my fingers crossed, that the roses outside will hold out long enough, to be used in the table decorations for our Glühwein party on Dec. 12. Sorry Emily, I know, that a variety surviving 2^F is not of much interest to you in H.Z. 10, but maybe the resistance to dry winds will ring a bell with you? Best, Olaf

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Hi Hazel.
when I saw your photo of the Eichhornia Crassipes, it reminded me very much of a Water Hyacinth, which I had grown a few years ago in a mini-pond in my gazebo. Sure enough, they are one and the same: Unfortunately the grapevines have overgrown the gazebo and the shadow is too deep now for anything to grow in that little pond. I have tried to grow the E.C. in the large pond behind the house, but they all withered away. It was only last year, that I learned why: The Koi in that pond love the juicy roots of those water hyacinths.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?
Hi Olafhenny
From Wikipedia : "Eichhornia crassipes, commonly known as Common Water Hyacinth, is an invasive species of plant which is native to the Amazon basin. This plant is also used like a medicinal plant." You're right.
