Rose hips are the seed pods of roses. We don’t often see them anymore, because we tend to prune the faded rose blossoms to encourage more flowers. However if you leave the spent flowers on the rose bush at the end of the season, you should see these small, berry-sized, reddish seed balls, left on tips of the stems. The flavor is described as fruity and spicy, much like the cranberry. Harvest the fruits after the first frost when they become fully-colored, but not overripe (after the first frost is recommended).

Rose hips are used for herbal tea, jam, jelly, syrup, soup, beverages, pies, bread, wine, and marmalade.

If you Google Rose hips you can find a lot of good information on rose hips and some recipes!

Thanks, JaNan, for explaining rose hips and their usage. I should try them in my tea some time.

You are welcome Rae! Rose hips are a good source of vitamin C and you will find them listed in the ingredients of the "healthy" tea blends. I have had the tea, but I think I am going to try a couple of the recipes since I have so many this year. ~J

This is a seed grown petunia that just opened today.

Here are a few of my indoor blooms:

I have never seen a Christmas cactus (or Thanksgiving or maybe a Halloween cactus in your case) with that many blooms on it! That thing is AMAZING! Beautiful blooms everyone!

Always impressed by anyone who can distinguish between Christmas and Thanksgiving/Easter cacti. You go to the head of the class!

These are in the garden now in spite of a low of 34 F the other night! Tonight's expected frost may do them in.
