Hi,
I just got this sago palm from the store, and I got a new pot for it today and went to replant it when I found this:




If the weird colored thicker roots are rot, then why is healthy roots growing out of them? Or is this not rot?

There is the sickly looking skin covering all the thicker inner roots, and it just comes right off like it is rot. And there is a bit of root rot, but there is healthy roots coming out of the thicker roots covered in the weird skin.

There are also weird little balls and lumps coming out of some of the roots.

Any ideas? This plant is sitting bare in my bathroom waiting to be planted, but I don't know what this stuff on it is.

I found what was wrong, it was rotted on the inside also.

It had some rot on the inside and it was on the middle parts of the roots to, moving its way out. So thats why some of the roots still looked ok.

I cut all the rot off of it, and from the inside of it. It was only the bottom part of the plant, so maybe it will grow back.

I put some rooting hormone on it and set it on top of the soil in hopes it will root.

The store must have been really over watering them! I feel so bad for this plant.

I'm not a cycad expert, but but i've grown quite a few of them. Those thick, white roots look fine to me— see a bite out of one, maybe, a little discoloration, but no rot. Why do you think you have root rot?

The roots where actually mushy around the middle. The camera doesn't show them very well.

And like I said a bit of the rot had moved into the plant more.

Hopefully it does well I really like this plant, I have never had one before.

If this one doesn't do well I might end up having to get some seeds to them or something. They are very cool looking And this one is kind of small and cute

It might not be alive. The Fronds can look alive for a really long time (since it only grows in "Flushes"). They are beautiful plants. I wouldnt start them from seed though. They are painfully slow growing from seed and would probably take over 5 years at least to get to the size of the plant in your pic.
Most people grow them from the pups that grow from mother plants since those grow much faster than plants from seed.

I hope it does come back for you, but if not, get another one because they are great plants and really easy to grow when healthy!

I have to say when this came in the mail I was thinking 'I feel sick before breakfast'. I can't say I saw a plant in a worse condition but hey...it may just root as others have said so good luck jreidsma!!

The only concern of mine is it may not tolerate cold conditions in its present state, best to pot and coddle it indoors till the roots settle some. Leave it till spring.

Sorry if you are talking about you own plant, but I got mine at Walmart, a local grocery store.

The inside of it (except the small amount that was rotted) looks fine and healthy. I think I caught the rot earlier then my last one was.

If I do get another one it will be from a place I trust online.

I have it inside by my lamp babying it Maybe it will root and grow nicely again.

I hope it pulls through for you. I have one in a 15 gal. pot that I would give you if you were closer. I never did like it - or any other plant that sticks you.
They're like squash, everybody is always trying to unload them when their female blooms and has all those seeds.

Ahh dang it....

It is also very deadly to dogs and animals in even small amount also right? It's one scary plant in its own ways!

It looks like it's rotting from the top. I'd assume whoever was watering them at Walmart watered very often yet did not water long enough to get deeper in the pot. If it does go in decline, you can chop up the stem to make new plants and growing them from seed is very easy (time consuming though).
