Re: Reminder about offensive content
well, I have no more time tonight for immature bickering and bantering back and forth, and BTW, none of the intent of anything I wrote was meant as antagonistic towards anyone on this site, I have to get up early for another film shoot, Im such a closed minded MORON, that never gets out, I guess, and for having wasted my time trying to get such a simple point across which seems to be incomprehensible to some of your minds. Maybe I should move somewhere like, say, the middle of Wisconsin and sit on the PC 24/7 instead to "open my mind" a bit more...........

Re: Reminder about offensive content
varig8, I just want to say I'll stand by you in attacking ppl for killing just for the kill, but I think you also said you don't mind it if the animal is put to use - as in feeding a family...or was that Clare? The hunters here, & ppl who don't object, don't kill just for the kill. Maybe you can put your energy into the poachers who are killing friendly dolfins, whales, elephants etc. I am against that. Just leave the legal hunters alone, -who feed their families w/ their legal hunting, . I'm sorry you saw a dead animal on here at homepage...I didn't see it. But the pic was small so, did you click on it to make it bigger to get a better look?

The truth is that only a minority of cultures find hunting unacceptable. The chief reason being that those cultures have already reduced the game populations to dangerously low levels through habitat destruction or hunting. Its not an 'evolved culture' that deems hunting unacceptable. What has evolved is the broad understanding about animal populations and the biology/ecology behind that. In the late 1800's, when entire towns in Texas spent weekends emptying the sky of passenger pigeons, they had no idea they were killing the animals to extinction. The technology for knowing animal populations estimates really did not exist back then. However, now, we as humans the world over, are much better at managing wildlife populations(for the most part). Fishing/hunting regulations are designed to sustain animal populations at the carrying capacity for that region and not as moral guidelines by an 'evolved culture'.

Re: Reminder about offensive content
Simply Bananas, I don't disagree that there were a lot of passenger pigeons killed by hunters. When the white man came to this country the passenger pigeon population is believed to have been between 4 and 9 billion birds.
But the vast majority of those birds were not killed as adults, they were simply picked up live off the ground as squabs loaded into wheelbarrows and then boxcars and shipped to markets like New York. Passenger pigeons had a strange reproductive process of gathering in massive flocks to nest. They would feed the squabs for 2 weeks and kick them out of the nest as they let the fledglings continue to develop. Predators would feast on the flightless squabs, but the overwhelming numbers satiated the predators--until man arrived. By the time we realized the population was too low it was too late--they would not breed without the massive numbers. They had a few in captivity that they tried to breed, but they never built a nest. The biggest effect on most animal populations is loss of habitat. Hunters are one of the major forces protecting critical habitats for many, spending billions of dollars to protect habitat, thru organizations like Ducks Unlimited, support of game management areas, hunting preserves (no hunting) and hunting leases that encourage land owners to manage their land as better habitat for game. There is NO way you could make out any detail - other then it was a deer And around the world most people hunt for food...very much accepted Diving in the Carribean we were sad to see the pretty fish that we keep in our salt water aquariums being caught for food Giant clams harvested for food Dolphin (the fish) caught & killed with a big stick as they are hauled into a small boat I've never seen most animals killed that I eat....but the ones that I have it doesn't stop me from eating them at all I think you perhaps are referring to the trophy hunters - that put the head on their game wall But the bodies of these animala ARE used for food....not wasted Generally its the poachers who are taking heads/tusks etc What TV show was it where a person suddenly could hear plants/fruits screaming in pain as they were "killed" ?

Can you believe what a stir we've caused with 2 seemingly harmless photo's. At least yours was a nice a buck! Mine was just meant as a fairly innocent commentary on the hardships involved...... not anywhere close to commercial netting though. Kind of crazy that this post generated more interest than the original. I have to wonder if the fishing pics would be looked on the same? I think from now on I'll just stick with bananas though No one "won" this one for sure..... what a shame. A lot of nasty words and rhetoric between members ... and for what? |

Bottom line is that we cannot know what exist in other people's mind, we do not know their intent or sensitivities. If something offends us, we should avoid it. If you only want to see discussions about bananas, don't visit the Tiki Hut. I come to this site mainly to learn about bananas, but my world is much bigger than bananas. I enjoy the enlightenment I get in the Tiki Hut. |

Re: Reminder about offensive content
MY TURN!!!!
I have sat back and followed both these threads and am appalled at how some of the folks on here can sit there and keep this crap going!!! Why don't we all just let this thing die and go on sharing our experiences with what we are all here for, bananas, and other plants that we all share a common interest in. If I want to talk about other topics with folks, I use a site like Facebook or MySpace. This site is for sharing information on growing and caring for bananas and other plants. As far as pictures go, I have been amazed at what some people upload in our, bananas.org's, picture gallery! Why don't you use a photosharing site like Photobucket to store pics and save this site's gallery for its intended purpose. Photobucket is free and is easy to use that I can even use it!! You can always link a pic off photobucket to a thread and not have it downloaded here. Sure would have kept this crap from ever happening in the first place!!! I am trying to be nice here and voice my opinion that I have held back for quite some time, but can't keep quiet any longer!!! People get a grip and shut up and get on with other topics for which Jarred has so graciously provided this site for!!!! Jarred has tried to be impartial and provided some explanation of what he expects and many of you are more or less "snubbing your nose" at him and keeping this thread going!!! Sure do miss the way it used to be here when there were people who respected each other and agreed to disagree! Many VERY knowledgable people have left this site because of how some of you are acting right now and I honestly cannot blame them, but I am still hopeful that there are enough of us "old timers" here that can help get everyone on the same page. All I want is for people to respect one another and treat each other kindly!!! Okay, now that is off my chest, have a good day and lets talk BANANAS!!! |

Re: Reminder about offensive content
Mitchel,
I figured you would be one of the first to try and tear me apart for posting my feelings. You are so good at it along with a few others here! Agree that Jarred did indeed provide us with the Tiki Hut, obviously, the Tiki Hut is where 90% of the problems exist and that is why I VERY seldom even venture in there! As far as having "proof" that older members have left because to the direction you and a few others seem to try and push this site toward, yes I do have proof, but do not feel that providing you with anything is needed. You have NO idea how many people I have talked with that have left or are still here and about to leave, but that is between me and them. There is such a thing as trusting someone's word without having to have proof. I have never given you or anyone else a reason to doubt my word! I know the people that posted the pics in question apologized and I believe they meant no harm, but like I stated at the beginning of my post, I have sat back and wanted to voice my opinion on this. I was not bringing it back up for any reason but to state that this would have all been avoided if this was done in the first place. Now, if you feel like you want to pick my words apart again, go ahead, but I would appreciate it if you would pm me about your concerns so we can work it out in private and not waste anymore energy on this. Thanks.... |
