I'm not the only one wondering why you would even bring this up. We were discussing hunting here & there really were no "gory details' OK?

Just thought I'd point out that there different way of navigating this website. I generally just click on the "Daily Posts" button and in doing that I subject my self to seeing every new thing that's been posted that day. Obviously this includes all things that have been posted in the "Tiki Hut" A person can also go directly to the area they want to visit right from the home page, like the "Main Banana Discussion" "Cold Hardy Bananas" etc etc. and not be subjected to anything but what's specific to that area of the site. I actually used to navigate the site that way but I have broadened my interests and now do read some of the other areas like the TC, Cold Hardy and other plants sections so it's easier to just click the "Daily Posts" button.

Here is an idea for Jarred. Is there a way to code the board so that the only way a person can see anything in the Tiki Hut is by actually entering that area? This way the new posts or daily posts buttons wouldn't show anything but plant areas. Just a thought.

Not in a big way, I'm a little perturbed that a bunch of non-banana photos have pushed my ripe banana bunch off of the main page. They are nice plants, but not a single plant being displayed on the home page banner right now is a banana. There ought to be a law... I wonder if maybe a photo should have to have a keyword "banana" to pop up there. Thoughts?

Good point Mitchel, I do the same as you, but I just noticed something about this thread--it is not in the Tiki Hut--it is under Site News & Help. The hunting thread that started this, however, is in the Tiki Hut.

Picture of my bananas now would not be very nice--very sad--dead things, in fact they could even be considered offensive to some people!

Yeah, I started uncovering things today and looked inside my shop (unheated) where I put most of my container bananas and sensitive plants--pineapple, dragon fruit--mushy plants. All of the outdoor bananas are just black mush, I am not even sure if the wrapping and insulation saved the stems--at least the corms will survive. My citrus is frozen, I spent much of today juicing frozen fruit, I can only hope that the damage to the trees is not permanent--ie death of the tree. I probably won't be enjoying home grown fruit next fall and winter like I have this yr.

It is not all bad news, I think my avocados survived unharmed and I know I did not loose my big citrus trees--just probably some leaves and maybe some limbs. I did have 2 pinapples that were almost ripe that I put in the garage--they are OK--I will get new plants from them, but I would have had 2 more blooming in spring.

Mitchel, you are right. I have starting using "New Posts" recently and see all the threads that were posted on, but I can go back to just visiting the Main Menu, which is where my interests lie mainly other than Classifieds.
Thanks Clare, I might take you up in the dragon fruit, but I am sure my bananas survived at the corm--I just don't expect any blooms this yr.

Someone said earlier that dead bananas might be offensive to someone. These bananas are definitely dead but I can't imagine them being offensive to anybody! I'm proud of my bananas (and Michael, my son!) Banana Gallery - Update on 2009 Mystery (Namwah?) Banana

Clare, I hope this means you'll continue visiting our banana threads.

I think you can go to your control panel and opt to ignore any person you want, then their posts won't show up for you.

Tune out undesirables by adding their usernames to the "Ignore List"; you can find it in Control Panel, under Miscellaneous. Any and all posts by the undesirable will look as follows:

Remove user from ignore list
Patty in Wisc
This message is hidden because Patty in Wisc is on your ignore list.

Works just as well for private messages. But not as well as banning.

It's reversible. To show specific postings, you can click the "view this post" button for the post. To "undo"the general ignore, click on "Remove user from ignore list".

Very helpful in keeping the ranting and raving to a minimum.

Not to jump in the mix on this one...just a general comment about the picture volume and an opportunity to throw out a compliment in particular to Jarred and the growth of the forum. I remember when the same pics would stay on the home page for days on end...some threads limped along with an occasional post. Not anymore.

There have been a few eerrrrr..........occasional "differences in opinion"....but wow what a job Jarred and the other moderators have done in controlling/limiting the flaming. Gardeners are so #@*&^%$ opinionated. I recall almost getting kicked off another board (exaggeration) over getting in to a discussion about the hazards of parasites in animal manure within a compost pile (not that it is relevant; but I dismissed the idea as being insignificant. I can not even recall the name of the parasite we discussed).

We all searched through other forums/web sites looking for more "Banana" specific sites. Never enough "Banana" discussions to satiate the quest for knowledge. I have added more cultivars (some are mush now) to my collection in 2009 than in any other single year (I have been growing bananas for over 40 years). Not to mention all of the great people (many in person; way more than I would have thought) I have met.

Kudos to Jarred, the other moderators and the "entire membership base (even the ones i do not always agree with!

Ignore list is a good idea! Click on "private messages" then on left - bottom, click on buddy/ ignore list & type in the person screen name in IGNORE list & then 'save'.
I like to go right to homepage & I click whatever I want to read on so that's best for me. If I click on "new post", there are some that I don't care to read at the time.

Thanks Mitchel, its a good idea.
What we can also do is create an Adults Only / Mature area (or give it an even better name) and make people A) "log in" and then, B) "opt in" to that section to participate. Then the Tiki Hut can be kept even cleaner and all the obscenity, foul language, politics, religion, amputation, non-plant death, hunting, dirty jokes, and other forms of controversial topics can be kept inside there. And it'll basically be a free for all. Offenders and people who make casual mistakes will get their threads moved into said section. And we could easily exclude it from showing up in the daily/new posts links.
Any other ideas to enhance the upcoming changes? Thanks for your help, I think we're finding a better way to handle things moving forward.

Jarred, when you say "opt in" does that mean that once opted in to the Tiki hut, that the daily or new posts would show up for me when "I" press the daily button?
