Default What's the status of this banana stump?

Hi! So I bought a orinoco, and the nursery gave me this stump with the sale. I planted it ... will it grow and flower? It looks to have all been cut off. I don't know if what it'll do is pup, or grow itself ... what do you all think?

Add about 3 more inches of soil up to the base of the green pstem, it might grow. The roots are coming out of the ground.

If it has bloomed it's done, but it will probably have some pup's. Don't give up on it give it plenty of time. It looks like it has pushed out a little, if it drys up on top cut a couple inches off

Thanks, everyone! Will do.

Yeah, I had no idea how deep to plant it, so that's good to know! It didn't come "pre-planted" if you will as the other ones I've planted were. So I'm glad I asked on here.

I appreciate all the assistance.

Lara

I kinda want to put a banana smilie on ... they're super fun ... but also super weird and kinda uncomfortable ... okay ...

Hi Lara! I just wanted to let you know that you’re banana plant will be totally fine! I’ve bought lots of banana stumps like that over time! All of mine grew up from that stump! It will just take time for it to start growing. Yes the top part with the cigar leaf coming out might just dry out. Mine did. You’ll just have to cut off a few inches and then it should start growing again. By the way if it worked for me here in Ohio it should work for you in Florida! You might just be impressed when it starts growing! Good luck!

Mary

Thank you Mary! So I shouldn't cut the top off yet, only if it looks dried out? I am so super new to this ... but excited to watch these super cool plants grow!

You’re welcome!Yes you should wait to cut the top off until it’s dried out. Believe me you’ll know when it’s dried out! It tends to look like butcher paper (brownish color). Good luck & have fun gardening!

That is exactly how we send them to one another in the mail.

The plant will sort itself out in no time

Just to add on to what everyone else has said - Orinoco Bananas are SUPER hardy, yours should grow soon with minimal effort.

My mother has been growing this variety for over 20 yrs. She has dug some out and laid them flat on the ground to wait for garbage day and surprisingly they started rooting into the ground and sending out new banana pups vertically!

I think this is why these can be found growing on the sides of the road in Florida frequently
