That's pretty fast! I'm thinking I could shave that down to around 8 months here with the right fert and full sun since you got 10 for zone 10 and I'm in the tropics

[quote=bob2ride;246915]Hello folks;
I planted bananas in Long Beach CA 18-20 months ago. We have the first bloom and bananas showing. I am new to banana growing and gardening in general. Newby question is what happens now? how long to wait for eating, picking etc...
put picture in my gallery

So now we're another month along. The bananas are growing nicely. When do I cut off the spent bloom?

Thanks

How long did it take yours to flower? What did the flag leaf look like?

I'd really like to see one this summer...

The flag leaf for the first flower looked like this:

The preceding leaf was about 1/3 the length of the other (normal) leaves.
The p-stems are going into their third summer having survived 2 winters wrapped with burlap and christmas lights

Another Namwa stem has flowered. It is from the mat adjacent to the one that flowered two weeks ago.

Question Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

So my Ensete glaucum is blooming I noticed yesterday this huge green flower. The herb is less than 2 years old. Some of the first seeds I got from James when I joined in 2012. I never thought about it but I assumed the fruit was not edible. My husband asked if they could be eaten.
So now I turn to YOU the experts:
#1: Are they not edible because they taste bad?
#2: Are the not edible because of the seeds?
#3: Are they not edible because...Why do you think or know?

Thanks and cheers ^_^

They are not edible because of the seeds. Not sure of the taste.

Thanks One vote because of seeds, if that's all it is I'll work around the seeds once just to try them. I've read the root is edible though, but I'm not digging them up to try them, since I know what I feed them...yikes!

Lets see what others have to say, thanks for your input
