Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Ok so it's way too early to be planting bananas outdoors in New Jersey right now but... I had to get my bananas out of the rented greenhouse to make room for the owners stock. No problem ... I put all the others in my hoop house and have a heater for it if neccesary... which I doubt since it's only been getting to the mid 40's for the most part and only for a short while near dawn. My ice cream banana though which was 8 1/2 ft( p- stem height) with a 6 ft pup was cut down to 6 ft and is back up to 7 with some new leaves growing already so.... I mulched it heavily around the base and wrapped it in plastic... on the warm sunny days I'll open the top to vent and close it back up at night for a few weeks....

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Hey Ante... when I got it it had been 7' and cut down to 3 1/2 to ship it to me. It grew to 8/12 ft ( p-stem height) last year so...theoretically its as old as a 12' plant. I'm really hoping for a flower this year... Wish me luck!

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Today I planted a Thai Black.
Has anyone any knowledge of any botanical description papers on Thai Black? Is it really Musa balbisiana or some other Musa species? |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I'm moving some bananas around to make room for other things and get more sun to some of my bananas that have been encroached upon by trees. Today I dug up a California Gold that's about 5' tall and moved it into a spot which I amended heavily so it can grow more vigorously and, hopefully, flower for me in a couple of months. It had a decent-size pup on it which I potted up. Can't decide if I'll sell it with these good prices they've been going for or if I'll keep it as a back-up.
Tomorrow I'll move a San Jose which is about 5.5'-6' tall. |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Today was amazing here. Truly summer like. The humidity was in the 80% range and temperatures rose into the upper 80s. It is dark now but still very warm and humid with temps around 80. I planted lots of cannas today and some mexican petunias yesterday (very large ones) and also cleaned up a little. Tommorrow has some thunderstorms in the forecast, but I would like to get even more things planted.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Here's my driveway bed.. doesn't look like much now. The Ensete Maurelii and Plumeria were overwintered dormant in root cellar , the E. Glaucum ( from seed ) overwintered on the porch .. theres also several Alocasia x Calidora corms a pineapple sage a cow parsnip and some passiflora on the fence.. should look nice here by July:
Heres the main banana bed with an large Ice Cream , 3 Ca. Gold, Dwarf nam Wah, Veinte Cohol, Kandrian, Gros Michel , Raja Puri and a couple of Ca. Cold Hardy.. I have a lot of hope for these: Last here's the"Lucky Banana" I won in Momoese's contest along with a couple of windmill and Needle palms that overwintered outdoors. The Trachycarpus burned at the tips but should flush out soon with the warm weather we've been having: Last edited by Bob : 05-05-2010 at 04:41 PM. |
