Hi Harvey
Yes, unfortunately I have to bring all banana plants in every fall. I don't have a greenhouse, Most of the plants I bring in, chop off the leaves and keep them in the basement where it is cool and dark. keeping them as dormant bulbs until spring. The others that I want to work with go into a special room where we can adjust humididty and light conditions. The Golden leaves banana is supposed to grow edible fruit. And is apparently very tasty. I will never know as I am allergic to banana's and have never eaten a whole one in my life. If I do, I could die. The plants sure are great though. I brought in my Dwarf Enano Gigante 3 weeks ago and noticed it is starting to variegate. If it continues to do so, and when it grows out a bit more, I will post a pic. I posted a pic of the Golden Leaves Banana in the Variegated pic section. Wolfe |

Thanks, Wolfe, for posting the photo. Looks nice - good luck! Sorry to hear of your allergy, I'll send you my address so you can ship the bananas this way. Just joking!

Potted the Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' received from Magilla Gorilla (thanks Andrew!) Keeping her in the shade for a week or so, until it can go into the greenhouse. Also potted: Kofi, 1,000 fingers, Valery, Xishuangbannensis (we'll see in spring if it is, in fact, as advertised) another M. lasiocarpa, 2 NoID's, a Traveler's Palm, 2 Taro bulbs, a Tree Fern and a boatload of seeds.
Also have to pot 6 TC's of Yangambi and Mai'a Maoli Eka (3 of each). Put 16 Ingens seeds in various potting media following Cape Smoke treatment (Thanks to Chong!) and still have about 300+ misc seeds to plant - ornata, perrieri, coccinea, superbum or glaucum (they weren't labelled), Higa and balbisiana (Thanks Gabe!). In the TC lab, I have several going, but more to put into culture over the next week. Dwarf Namwa pearl, maybe Saba and Pitogo (if the corms don't start showing some signs of life soon) That's most of it, I guess. |

Sometime in October, I dug up one of my IC nana & potted it into a too-small temporary pot. 23 days later, I put it in a 30 gal pot & I could not believe how much the roots grew in 23 days! It was a good potting mix I guess.
It's in the L room (20ft ceiling) in south facing window - no xtra lights, & it just put out a huge leaf. I also put my 2 TC babies in a 5 inch pot (was in 2 inch). My Christmas cactus is finally starting blooms like crazy- after a tiny cutting rooted in water 1 1/2 years ago. It is huge & I just potted up from 6" to a 10" pot as it was rootbound . Can't wait for the blooms to open. Also, I potted my Amarylis & it is growing again (from it's nap). And, I potted a peace lily stored in fridg crisper. I bought it last Easter & cut it down & stored the bulb --it has many babies & main stem is about 8 inches now. And, they said potted Easter lilys never grow back! It'll be nice to have flowers blooming in Dec, Jan & Feb!!!

Patty - I have grown Easter Lily bulbs. (Lilium something or other) After they bloomed (bulbs forced in a GH to bloom at Easter) we put them in the ground, and they bloom each Jun/Jul. However, if you have what is commonly called a Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) this is a tropical, and does not need to be cut back, nor does it need to be put in the fridge. (in fact, refrigerating it might even kill it)
As far as the Christmas ( Thanksgiving, Easter) cactus goes, they really like a little jolt of cold, to set buds. My mother, who brought a cutting with her, from Norway, kept the plant, for 30 years, in the concrete cut out window, in the cellar, where it got down to 39ºF. When it became loaded with buds, she brought it up. |

Thanks John. I thought Easter lily is same as Peace lily(?). They are the white fragrant ones that you always see around Easter. One year after it bloomed, I planted it outside & it survived winter & bloomed next year. It since died.

Nope, different plants. Peace Lily is tropical, commonly sold as indoor plant.

Today I planted a Cardaba, and yesterday a KM-5. We had a low temp this morning of 50F and tomorrow morning it should be 48 for the low. This weather not only inhibits growth of the bananas but seems to inhibit sigatoka also. Cold is a greater threat to banana production than is sigatoka in this area. Field trial confirmation might be appropriate.

Yesterday (too tired to post last night) I planted a Kru and a Monkey Fingers. The day before I planted a FHIA-18. Early morning low temperatures have been in the low 60s. Not the best banana weather, but far from the worst.
Best wishes and Happy New Year to all! |

Today I transplanted 5 Glu Kai and 4 Ebon Musak to larger containers. I may have to bring into the garage all those and more Tuesday night as temperatures here may get down to freezing wednesday morning. I count my blessings at the edge of zone 10!! The Flu, bronchitis => pneumonia, 102.5 F had me down the last week in the hospital. Germs gravitate to this area also. I'm recovering praise God!!
Best wishes to all! |
