Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)

I have previously harvested an SH3640, and I remember liking them too. The SH3640 I sampled yesterday (before they went into the dehydrator) I don't believe were completely ripe yet. I may sample a bit more as time progresses. Note*. The blue java bananas in the picture were actually a bit of a surprise. In my case, the plant lowered the bunch to the ground-which, based on a different previous harvest to me seemed like a signal that the bunch should be ripe. (For example, a prior SH3640 bunch started turning yellow shortly after reaching ground level. but this year's actually were yellowing on the plant, so I cut the bunch down.) However, there was no yellow on the Blue java to be found, and I cut one off-it was not pleasant tasting and a bit dry. I thought maybe the plant had developed some problem I wasn't aware of. I almost threw the whole bunch out. However, for some reason I decided to do what I normally do, and tied the bunch with some rope to hang on my ladder-and left it alone. After a few days of green, the yellow appeared. and that was that. Last edited by keybrdkid09 : 10-03-2013 at 09:00 PM. |

as for that answer, I'm not sure. that would probably be a question better directed at Don/Katie from goingbananas. That is where these plants came from. I read something on the namwah/blue java thing somewhere... Last edited by keybrdkid09 : 10-03-2013 at 08:59 PM. |

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
Without pictures, the description that it lowered down would be consistent with the real ones which tend to lean a lot or fall over entirely, even before they have bunches. Whereas the namwahs I've harvested (all 2 anyway) didn't lean like that.

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
Might depend on the environmental conditions or cultivar. Typically Dwarf Namwah is a leaner, despite its thick "trunk"; the medium height "Misi Luki Namwah" is not a leaner; and the tall "Ice Cream Namwah" is a leaner in my yard.

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
I am not sure what these are. I got this plant as a pup from one of the members here but was told it was an ice cream. Regardless, they are very good, but anyone want to gander a guess on what they are?

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
The widely spaced hands suggest Manzano, getting them as "Ice Cream" suggests "Namwah". Are the petioles of mature leaves open or mostly closed? How about the flavor, a touch of tartness or not?

Yes, a touch of tartness.
I'm thinking probably apple but just looking for confirmation. |

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
Definitely not Namwah, and most likely Manzano.
Good photos for illustration EZ. |

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
Manzano and Namwah, both have open and closed petioles.
Check the mature leaf ratio (3rd & 4th), my Manzano are between 4.0 and 4.7 to 1 Manzano leaf in the background Manzano leaf Mature Manzano +/- 10' Mature Manzano Petiole Manzano Petiole - (upper) 3rd leaf from bud closed - (lower) 4th leaf from bud open Namwah type - Open petioles - Flag leaf & 3rd leaf Open petioles - Flag leaf & 3rd leaf Same Photo

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
Sometimes that's true, but there are many factors that control leaning.
Here's a banana that's naturally leaning away from optimum light, it's curvature is being influenced by the wind. aug 22 sep 25 - - planted apr 16 oct 3 - fruit 17" - oct 7 fruit 18"

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
I'm sure your findings are correct but with my plants Manzano and Dwarf Namwah there is very little difference. The Manzano mat consist of 10 plants (not counting sword suckers) starting at 4 feet and up all of them have the same style petioles (straight with erect margins). One plant has fruit and the third leaf down looks exactly the same as all the other leaves. The Namwah mat consist of five plants (not counting sword suckers) starting at 28 inches and up. The Namwah petioles (margins curved inward) were slightly different some have a small space between the margins and some do not, none of the margins were overlapping. One plant has a flag leaf and the third leaf down has no space between the margins. With my plants each variety generally has the same style and shape petiole. Thanks for sharing I never thought there could be such a difference in petiole styles with the same plant. |

I had over a thousand feral Manzanos to choose from, but already knew that petioles vary on the same plant and on plants in the same mat. I lost interest in petioles long ago because of the inconsistency with plantains.

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
26 Lbs of immature Pisang Klotek. Plant was leaning over the driveway where I have to work so no way to properly support the bunch. I tied a rope from the house to the detached garage with a thick foam cover and stretched it tight to push against the PS but alas it was too low and the winds broke the top of the PS over the support. We'll see how they ripen.
