Nice work Bob, and such dedication too! Nice to see its all paying off, and of course what doesn't work out will always add to your knowledge base of what you can do there.

Nothing wrong with trying. I'd try to keep it on the dry side to keep it from growing too much over the winter. If you're lucky, you can put it back out in the spring and it'll pick up where it left off this year. It's tough to keep them inside and in a dormant state. The warmth seems to make them want to grow even if kept dry.

Plus one on bad timing. One of my Goldfinger just started a flag leaf. I'm just hoping and praying my Raja puri does'nt flag. I pampered it too much this year.

The Dasycarpa has been in the house for a week now and the flower has grown and is opening! Sure the best I can hope for is a stunted flower and bunch but it's still exciting for New Jersey so I'll keep posting some pics till the bitter end. Here's todays shots... the bud starts to open:

and sure enough is revealing some tiny flowers underneath !!!!

It'll be fun looking at this grow when there's snow on the ground in a few months. I have read that moving a flowering plant indoors or to a pot from the ground is useless but in this case it seems to be working and in my climate about all you can hope to do.... you never know unless you try.

Hey Hammer
Most everything I have is pretty tall, I have a couple of goldfingers that are slightly smaller than the one that flagged, maybe 12 ft. or so. My raja puri is about 5 ft. tall.
If we have a mild winter, I should have some fruit next year.

I was worried that bringing a plant dug from the ground at flowering would shock it too much but it seems to be working, here's shots from the last few days as new petals opened to reveal little pink edged whitish bananas which soon turn pink. I'm sure this one's going to make it now and hope it will inspire others in climates where bananas wouldn't survive to at least try for some extra success.

A few days later ( today):

I'm thinking that the M. dasycarpa(Velutina) is the perfect plant to grow in a pot or indoors for those climate challenged gardeners who lack the space indoors for a larger plant. This one even in a large , tallish pot would fit in even a small crowded room so literally anyone could successfully grow this one.

Great news Bob, I love that you have been able to transplant the Velutina indoors after being in the ground. That's definately on next years list. Well good luck on the VC. I guess mine is going to wait until spring if I can overwinter it in the garage ok. I hope the only flags you've seen have been Naners and not out in the woods (if you know what I mean, not to offend anyone). Once again good job.

The really cool thing is that this is just a first year plant.... technichally anyway. I first got it last year and when the mother plant was a little taller than the first one flowering now I accidently broke it in half walking by it in the crowded garden. The mother plant died in it's pot over the winter and this Velutina flower is on a first year pup but , with a 2 year old corm. Still it seems this is just a great variety to have for those of us in the north with limited space ...and impatient waiting for a bloom.
