This seems to be happening to everyone this year... more tales of bad timing!
This seems to be the year for lots of us to get blooms or a flag popping up late so I thought I'd join in...
First my Veinte Cohol threw out this start of a flag earlier in the week: Yesterday I was working in the new side garden and hadn't been over there in about a week since it had been raining and cool out. Sure enough...... the Velutina ( or is it Dasycrappa now? ).. threw out this bright red start of a flag: I guess in New Jersey I should just count my blessings and be happy with it but... NO! I think I can dig and pot the velutina without disturbing the roots and its early enough I can keep it in my front porch that I'm starting to move plants into now... The Veinte Cohol.... : ( Too big to bring in and ... since it only takes a few months from flowering to mature ripe fruit on this variety I may try to protect it with a plastic cover...I'll let you know Really not sure whether to smile or pull my hair out over it... may as well enjoy the success however minor I suppose... |

The Ice creams are fattening up but not getting much longer. I'll post a pic of them soon so you can see before I build the plastic tent over them to get an extra few weeks of warmth... I may have a few otherlow tech season extension tricks I'm going to try as well.

Have you thought of using a fleece wrap to protect it during the night and even day when it gets a bit too chilly??

Always bragging about your bananas, eh Bob? I should have known you'd have more flags before the end of the season.
Why you! Nonetheless... |

Angelstar.... yeah I have garden fleece( we call it remay here... or at least I did for the past 20 years!)and I know a lot of tricks to overwinter or extend the season for other things but the bananas are so big that its tough and it gets very cold here... we'll see. Tah.
Thanks HBL... why are you being nice to me? .... "Depends" on your mood I guess ? ...oh I know..... not to worry your plants have been packed and will shortly be on the way Patty... you're the banana queen and you stunk first but.... thanks Ron,.... luck of the draw man... these plants were over a year old and .... just got lucky I guess. |

Re: This seems to be happening to everyone this year... more tales of bad timing!
Not giving up!!!!
I decided to carefully dig up the M.Dasycarpa( Velutina) really carefully and was sure I wouldnt do any damage to the roots and think I may have pulled it off.... here it is in it's 12 gallon pot right after digging... It's in my front porch for the winter now and looking like there's been no transplant shock at all... I'll post either way if it does well or not. I'm thinking now that I may be able to do something similar with the Veinte Cohol. Something Jon ( Pitangadiego) told me and stuck with me was that even if a banana fell over while fruiting to just leave it and the bunch would likely continue to mature and ripen. It's too tall for my front porch and too late in the season to leave out but ..... if I carefully dig that up and left it at an angle so it would fit indoors.......hmmmmm? I'll keep you posted one way or the other.. never hurts to try right? |

Re: This seems to be happening to everyone this year... more tales of bad timing!
Well done Bob!!! I hope it rewards you with a nice bunch for your labor!!!
Looking forward to see it's progress! Regarding the Veinte Cohol,I would say that you shouldn't have any special problems planting a too tall banana at an angle save for instability which can be solved with a few well placed supports so as not to create a stress point on the pseudostem.

Good idea to just 'lean' it somewhere! You sure didn't have much notice for that flower bud...no smaller size leaves - like, flag of a flag of the flag LOL. Can't wait to see how many fingers.

Cool, Bob! You've had a lot of success up there this year. I think your velutina will be just fine. Good luck with the VC.
I just returned to Aruba and my IC put out a ton of fruit while I was gone! I'll try to post some pics in my "Oh sure! Now it decideds to bloom" thread later on. |

Re: This seems to be happening to everyone this year... more tales of bad timing!
I can't stand to give up.... the velutina is in my front porch and showing no signs of transplant shock and the bud is showing some signs of growth.
The Veinte Cohol was way to big to even lay half way down in the porch with the other plants and I was sure it was doomed ........ till I remembered a friend of mine( who I gave some pups to last month) had about a 12 ft tall sunroom.......hmmmmm? A sip of the Scotish nerve tonic for inner strength and a quick phone call and the Veinte Cohol was on its way.... even with a 6 or so ft p-stem once it was potted it barely fit but.... sometimes you try to make things work: It almost hit the glass ceiling but... it made it. Sure maybe it wont make it being transplanted in flower like many have suggested but... not for lack of trying. I'll post updates no matter what. Last edited by Bob : 10-31-2010 at 03:10 PM. |
