Questions about transplanting pups
Hi all,
I have a blue java tree that is doing really well. It has 4 pups, two of which are about waist high and I think it's time to remove one. I saw the sticky which was helpful, as well as watched a few videos. Seems pretty straightforward, but I do have some questions. I'm in San Diego. Temps are currently getting up into the high 70s low 80s and the trees are getting A LOT of sun. There isn't really anything blocking them. They are doing well, growing fast and look very healthy. I've been watering almost daily, but I did slow down a bit in the past few days, thinking I probably don't need to water so much. As far as removing pups, is there a particular time of day I should do it for best chance of survival? Also, one of the videos I saw mentioned IV Organics sunblock paint to help protect the plant from transpalant shock. What does everyone think about that product or a similar product? |

Re: Questions about transplanting pups
So I'm a rookie and a rule breaker but I can tell you that at the end of April I cut off a 4' (pstem) pup and planted it directly in to a prepared hole and in that time its pushed out 7 leaves and it's already sending out pups. I'm pretty sure it's a namwah.
Not really advising, just sharing one hacks experience. I'm learning you can dote over them too much sometimes. |

Re: Questions about transplanting pups
Just make sure to try to make your initial cut as close to the Mother plant as possible. Don't worry about taking off a bit of the Mother's corm. Its no big deal if you're only removing a couple pups and the plant is not flowering. If you botch it up you will get more chances in the future. Good luck!

Re: Questions about transplanting pups
I don't think the time of day that you remove a pup will make any difference. As for IV Organics, I have seen some of their videos, but I've never used the product. Never saw a need for it. If I want to protect something from the sun I use 40% shade cloth.

Re: Questions about transplanting pups
You are fine, I have a rule of not cutting pups over 110F as it makes them stall and sometimes rot.
