Jon, It was recently brought to my attention by Gabe that my Pisang Klotek is Mysore. After searching around a bit I am convinced this is true. Reading about Mysore and Misi Luki on your site you say that the Misi Luki we have in the USA is not the real Misi Luki which is really a Mysore. So does this mean my Pisang Klotek is the true Misi Luki, or is it Mysore?
The Misi Luki I got from you looks nothing like the Pisang Klotek I have so I'm thinking it's the "false" Misi Luki? If so what is the Misi Luki I got from you? Last edited by momoese : 12-11-2009 at 12:13 PM. |

Mysore is an entire subgroup, so there are a fair few number of different cultivars which would all be classified under Mysore, it doesnt mean they are exactly the same, but that they all are mutations off of an original single cultivar. 'Pisang Klotek' may not be exactly like the 'Mysore' in the US, but its very similar. 'Misiluki' is the name for 'Mysore' commonly used in Samoa, and the clone they have their may indeed be different from the 'Mysore' or 'Misi Luki' in the US, but I have not seen either fruit and this kind of information is not so easy to look up.
However, there is one trait about all of the Mysores which make them fairly easy to ID if there is reason to believe that a cultivar should be a Mysore, even when young, and that is the presence of a reddish/coppery tint on the undersides of the leaves.

From Encanto Farms website.
POPOULU - Can be eaten raw, but is commonly cooked. Bears good-sized bunches of short plump fruits with pink flesh. 12-14'. HUA MOA - One of the finest cooking bananas, it is also very palatable eaten raw. In contrast to the Popoulu it bears far fewer fruits, but they are considerably larger. The plant is very slender and elegant with long narrow leaves. Tender. 8-12'. (009) |

Momoese, I guess I am late to the party.
My Mysore, which seems to be the same as one labeled Poovan, is tall, very slender and has a small, nice, bright-flavored fruit. Trunk tends to have a lot of black coloration. I don't think I have noticed a reddish coloration on the undersiade of the leaves, but they are definitely darker in color than many varieties, and might have a dark purplish tinge. Slow grower, not many pups. My Misi Luki has no similarity to Mysore, or your Pisang Klotek, so far. Misi Luki is quite tall, with a short fat fruit with a nice apple-ish flavor. Leaves and trunk are very light, lime-ish green in color and the trunk is quite stout. Probably the best I have in all respects. Relatively fast grower, many pups. Your Pisang Klotek is more slender than than many, but not as slender as Mysore, so far. Appears to have more color, but not as dark as Mysore. Started slow, but is growing well, now. Only one pup so far, which is definitely growing faster than Mysore. No fruit yet. I don't expect Mysore and Pisang Klotek to be the same, but haven't seen PK fruit, yet. I have one labeled "Ice Cream" and one labeled "Gran Nain" which are really the same as my Misi Luki. So, often hard to tell what has been accurately labeled. So, I have most pictured at We Be Bananas, as they appear here at my location, under the names that they had when I acquired them, Doesn't mean that they were correctly labeled, only that this is the point of reference that I have. Don't think that my Hua Moa and my Popoulu were the same, except for the snub nosed or blunt shape of the fruit.

Popo'ulu is a group of bananas (combined with the Maoli), the name does not refer to one cultivar in particular so without seeing it up close its hard to say what the full name would be for the "Popoulu" in the US. 'Huamoa' is a type of Popo'ulu, sometimes the full name is written as 'Popo'ulu Huamoa'.
