Default More flowers! Hey Pitangadiego look.

In talking with Pitangadiego we sort of came to the conclusion that the Cambodian bananas I'm growing are Namwa's. My pups came from a very old stand that is owned by the local Camodian Shamen in Long Beach Ca. This is the first of three plants I got from him to flower. This one was damaged a bit last winter and ended up growing out the side of the p-stem so it's not the biggest of the 3, just the first to flower. Can you take a look at the flowers and see what you think. Namwa?

The first day it opened. (yesterday)

Mitchel,

It's a little hard to tell, but nothing obviosuly says ther are NOT namwah. They should have a nice bluish color similar to Ice Cream, but without the silver blush.

I agree with Jon there. It does not not look like Namwah. Boy that was some bad grammar, hehe.
I do have some close up shot of the blooms but will have to look for them. A few years ago, I had one fruit that had a slightly developed seed, but it might of been an aborted seed since my teeth didn't break but the seed. I hear that the variety is somewhat fertile if pollinated.

Eggo & others- I am very interested in the possibility that Namwah might produce a seed or two if pollinated with viable pollen. Has anyone else had any experience with Namwah throwing a seed or two in a bunch?

Many Thanks,
Richard

Here is another Photo of my Orinoco blooming! This one looks similar to yours too.

See what you think.

They do look the same. I'm kinda wondering if you can really tell by the flowers? I'll have to wait and see how the fruit looks as it matures.

For what it's worth, I've never gotten anything quite that blue from an Orinoco blossom. Frank, do your blooms look like that first photo?

Mitchel. The neighbors has bloomed once, but is not currently doing it.

I believe that the male stage flowers are definitive for determining variety. Many female stage flowers are similar.

Here's my dwarf Namwa from earlier this year. I thought I had some close up pics of the blooms but unfortunately haven't been able to find em yet. The male blooms are the blooms that come out after all the blooms with the developping fruit shows up. These male blooms are usually the long blooming bud you see hanging down long after the fruits have developed. It makes a good vegetable side, Namwa blooms has no bitterness to them.

GATrops, I did read somewhere that Namwah is somewhat fertile if pollinated but can't find where I got this info from. There were a few posts on gardenweb before by a couple different members, they mention running into edible bananas they sampled while in Thailand that had seeds. I have never tried to hand pollinate them before but may give it a try one day.

Male stage flowers are those that fall off without forming fruits. If you can see flowers starting to fall off without forming fruit, those are the beginnings of male stage flowers, and from then on, it will only be male stage flowers.
