New Ensete leaves coming out deformed?
3 out of the last 5 leaves have came out deformed on my Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii'. I was just wandering if anybody has seen anything like this before and if there is anything that i could do to help it out?
As you can see when the leaf is still rolled up in the "cigar" it has a section missing close to the tip already...It is not shredded by the wind or eaten it just came out that way. |

Re: New Ensete leaves coming out deformed?
Mine totally was doing crazy deformed things like that last summer. I never figured out what caused it....possibly too wet/humid or some other conditional issue it didn't like. IMO, E. maurelii are kinda fastidious and don't grow right in my climate for some reason. I've seen ones at the local nursery doing the same things mine was doing.

Re: New Ensete leaves coming out deformed?
Is it possible they're just growing so fast that the new leaves are tearing themselves? My Maurelii has one leaf looking much the same and I just figured that's normal and happens from time to time.

Re: New Ensete leaves coming out deformed?
This has also been my experience with ensete, and indeed with some musa. The only time it's a problem is if the leaf gets held up and can't get out, then I have to cut to allow it to develop (I call it a 'leafcerian delivery'.). Otherwise, I just say I have a very interesting leaf shape!

Re: New Ensete leaves coming out deformed?
I have a dwarf namwah that is doing the same thing right now. The leaf comes out about 1/3 of the way and starts to unroll. Most of the leaves this summer are torn in 5 or 6 places and have a slightly odd curl to them.
