I've had this happen in the past as the stem thickens, looks to me like its just outgrowing its old leaves, like a snake outgrows its skin (kind of).
The new emerging leaf looks healthy to me, if thats a good indicator. ~Joe |

Orinocos do that for a while after you move them around.
Ice Creams too. Probably a lot of others, too! I wouldn't worry too much about it, just resist the urge to cut them off unless aesthetics are very important where the plant is located. |

oh and when you say "was about to choke" do you mean that there was a bud that was coming out improperly, or the leaves were getting all wrapped up in each other as they emerged? It could just be a major change in the growth that causes the sheathes to not be able to cling on, maybe too drastic of a change in caliper. Just some ideas... I'd assume that research has been done on the phenomenon though for a more definitive answer.

I have the same phenom on my dwarf cav also and I thought that is just the basic characteristics of such plant for being dwarf.
I don't think nothing of it as long as it looks healthy and green. I am new to this BTW.

I'm going with the snake theory. I have a Basjoo that was planted recently doing the same thing. The PS started getting thick real fast and the same things happened to it.

Sometimes stems do die off without flowering, especially if they have had a hard time in some way.

Do you think maybe its too much water. I am just going to whack the plant back to the ground and let the pups take over.
