As you can see when the leaf is still rolled up in the "cigar" it has a section missing close to the tip already...It is not shredded by the wind or eaten it just came out that way.
If this plant is in a pot, then use small orchid bark (1/4 to 1/2 inch diameter) as a mulch on the entire soil surface about 1.5 inches thick. If it is in the ground, then use 1-inch diameter mulch about 4 inches thick in at least 2.5 foot radius around the plant. Make sure the plant gets deep waterings across the entire area -- not just in little spots from drippers. Check the soil moisture a few times per week to avoid over- or under-watering.
