Default The importance of planting at or above grade?

So we had a crazy week of rain everyday here in SE Texas. Just when it was starting to dry up…here it comes again. Looks like for another wet week for SE Texas.

I planted the last two plants (light brown mulch) 2-3” above grade. Dwarf Brazilian on LT and Dwarf Namwa on RT. The other Dwarf Cavendish in the back is right at grade.

How important is it to plant the plants higher?

Situation is deteriorating. One thing is for sure. It’s flushing the yard of contaminants. :-)

Yeah it's been pouring rain like crazy down here these past 2 weeks.

I'm slowly building raised beds for all my bananas so they don't have to soak in saturated clay and give the corm room to drain excess water.

Yeah it should help a lot.
However, looking at your pictures you have WAY more water pooling up.
You can't even see the grass anymore. If possible you should look into digging a water channel to direct all the water out of your yard.

True that. It wasn’t just my yard though. There’s some
Major flooding in the whole area.

WOW! That's crazy! My area was nowhere near as bad, my ground is just super saturated from non-stop off and on rain for 2 weeks.

Man, you’d think plants would love more water, but this is beyond what they can handle.

Growing bananas in a raised bed, or elevated bed works great. Soil over-saturation, especially in winter when bananas are not active and do not need a lot of water, or summer when there are monsoon type rains, is much more controllable when the gropund is raised and not boggy.

The roots got exposed during the flood. This is a new plant. Kinda shocked at how well the roots are growing already.

And of course…the pics won’t post. This is the worst forum for pictures. I’ve been on a lot of message boards too. I have a guy that can make this process ridiculously simple if you guys would like. I can contact him whenever you’re ready. Any picture will work at anytime. No pic resize needed. No pic orientation needed. The system will do it all for you. The member will be able to easily upload with no problems at all.
