Pruning bananas leaves
I was watching this YouTuber called leadfarmer and he was saying how he prunes back old leaf leaving on his gran nain, only leaving the newest and healthiest on the plant. Like the top 3/4, He said as the old leaves are sapping energy so cutting it concentrates energy into new leaf growth, so the plant grows quicker.
Is this true? Or myth? Anyone do this I can link the vid if anyone wants to see what o mean |

Re: Pruning bananas leaves
Several members on here say only cut off brown or dead leaves. Anything green is still providing energy to the plant.
I don't know if there is any truth to 'forcing' the plant to grow new leaves by cutting off healthy leaves. Bananas are very resilient they will still continue to grow even if you chop off all the leaves.

Re: Pruning bananas leaves
Leaves are like solar panels. All the cost is in the installation. Maintenance is behind the comma. Yes, the power drops in time with age however 50% of something is always greater than 0% of nothing.
The theory about leaf pruning is that the plant will grow vertically faster when the old leaves are pruned off vs. when the old leaves are maintained till they fall off/turn brown. Old aged solar panels are taken offline early forcing the plant to produce new solar panels faster to maintain/increase power level. There appears to be some truth to this (plant grows slightly faster vertiically) but its not clear if there is a net benefit for the plant (could result in slightly earlier but smaller bunches). I chose to maintain the leaves as long as possible but do remove for aesthetic reasons i.e. brown leaves are unattractive to me. I want maximum production of energey during the entire life of the plant so the plant is strong and can produce large bunches. More leaves also means more power is available to push the growth of pups. |

Cheers Alos his bunches in his video weren’t massive like some I’ve seen. So that sounds plausible |

Re: Pruning bananas leaves
Really no reason to remove any green material from a banana plant. Anything green is adding energy to the plant. More energy leads to more and larger fruit.
