Default Help Identifying Banana & Care

Hi everyone!

So glad I stumbled across your site.

HELP! :-)

Iíve been wanting to purchase a banana plant for several years now. I live in Montreal, Canada (approximately zone 5b).

The local town that I live in uses a specific variety of banana for their community planters. They are stunning once growing season is in full swing!

Anyway, after a few summers of searching, I recently found what I think is same variety at a local greenhouse. Itís about 3 feet tall at the moment (as seen in photo). I just transplanted plant from its greenhouse pot (about 10Ē) to its new summer pot which is about 20Ē in diameter.

Donít know what Iím doing wrong, but many of the leaves, including new ones that have just unfurled, are TURNING BROWN and in spots are almost transparent. Weíre just coming out of a two week heatwave (in the 30ís C / 90ís F), so maybe this is contributing to the problem? Iíve been watering heavily on a daily basis?

Plant has full sun for the majority of the day, but starts its day and ends its day in dappled sunlight (partial shade).

If Possible, I would appreciate knowing its actual variety and care. Perhaps thereís already a link on your site that can help me with this?

Also, will be needing to know the best way to overwinter, but that can be another post down the road.

Thanks & glad to be here!

Chris aka CanBanDo (short for Canada Banana Do ;-))

Banana Joe, thanks for your quick response.

I googled the variety that you were thinking, and bingo, thatís it! Exactly what we have in our city planters!

How often would you fertilize using a soluble fertilizer?

Also, no rush, but I found this video on how to overwintering Ensete Maurelli. If you have the time, could you throw in your two cents and let me know if this method in video is the correct way to overwinter or not?

Thanks!
Stay safe!

I don't really know anything about Ensete bananas, but with a regular banana, I would fertilize monthly. Or you can use smaller doses every week. You can tell if you are over fertilizing if your leaves are coming out torn. As to the video, that looks like it works , so yes

Hi Joe / everyone,

Iíve uploaded a few pics of a new banana leaf unfurling this morning (please see Members Gallery ďCanBanDo / Leaf Damageď). As you can see, itís opening with existing damage. Is this from my overwatering or something else?
