![]() Okay, I received a tissue culture earlier this year and already around 14-16" it's got a pup popping out of the soil. Now when you say second generation and beyond that a double-quad stock and flowers can form does the second generation pup have to remain attached to the mother or can it be seperated and still have this deformity? Also being it's a tissue culture at this size, would this first pup possibly produce this double stock?
Thanks guys! ![]() |

![]() hey, I don't know either.
But I'm glad to hear it's doing so well. My guess is that it would have to stay together in a mat though. Maybe someone can chime in who has had one flower/fruit.

![]() Hey Sandy, thanks for the quick responce, since I did get this and other tc's from you, maybe you can answer this as well. Would the hormones in the TCing process continue to work on the main plant after removed from culture or has the natural state of things taken over and this is just how it is... or is it I'm just very good at taking care of them

![]() JP I'm not sure i truly understand your question but the double mahoi is just like any other Banana in that it produces pups and you should always leave two on the plant the rest can be separated that way you will get fruit from the mat every year more than two will make the momma plant put all here energy in to making pups and there won't be enough to make any fruit did that answer your question?
PS. some Bananas just like to make lots of pups and some times its a sign of stress the momma think she mite die so shes making pups to insure the survival of the species

![]() My double mahoi is still puny, but I hope it grows better once I get her into a larger pot. Trying to keep them small for the big move. Hope mine pups a lot too. My understanding is that once the TC'ed plants are removed from the culture medium, the medium is rinsed and then the plants are hardened. There may be some residual effect of the hormones that would work their way out through the normal photsynthetic process. As the roots and leaves take over, the hormones are naturally produced. So, in my opinion, the plants are responding to your TLC, not the TC hormones.

![]() I've heard two different theories on this. One says that the pups that come up on the tc plants so readily were buds that developed in response to the chemicals used to replicate the plants in the test tubes. In other words, the chemicals caused lots of buds to form, but not all of them grew at the same rate, some were under developed. Then when the plants were split up and put into rooting chemicals, the underdeveloped buds went with them.
Then I've also heard that they are really regular pups. So I really don't know at all. I'd really be leaning more towards the first explanation though myself, since bananas that size don't usually produce pups. I do know that it's really cool though. I have one rose that's growing into its own miniclump. It has one larger one and 8 pups now!

![]() JP i didn't see Sandy's response when i rote that but it makes perfect sense to me i still fill a bit fuzz as to what the original question was i answered your question with just a general statement I did not intend to imply that it was the best answer also i have no idea what your gardening experience is so i was just sticking to Banana basics sorry if i was confusing or just plane wrong lol

![]() It's all good Pauly. Let me see if I can rephrase the original question. Everywhere you read a double mahoi will have a deformity of two+ stalks, but only the second+ generation have this deformity, not the orginal tissue cultured plant. My question is if I seperate the second generation pup, will it more than likely retain and produce this deformity. That was the first question. The second was since mine is a TC and it is so small... would the pup be considered a second generation or would it possibly be another pup as a product of the tissue culturing process and be considered a "first generation" due to the not-so-natural reproductive process?

![]() Although I'm only speculating, I think the double inflorescense(flower spike) is a result of maturity of the plant mat, not just that it's a 2nd generation.
I think that if you try to take a pup off and grow it on it's own, it will need an attatched pup of it's own to have the double flower spike. Margie |
