![]() I am new to Bananas and am becoming a little obsessive about them. I have Always loved bananas (especially with peanut butter) but about 8 or 9 years ago, I had a dentist forget to turn off the Nitrous Oxide and left me on it for about 2 hours, never turning the Oxygen back on. I then started having very bad/strong Heart Palpitations. They would start and stop randomly or when ever I exert myself or get upset or angry. The Cardiologists think It may be something I've had my whole life and that incident just made it worse.
I have now found, for some reason bananas also make them worse. The longer I avoid bananas, the less frequent they become. If I eat a banana or 2 (even if over a week) they start happening again. Thought it was my imagination so, I avoided bananas for well over a year and palpitations just about stopped. I then ate one banana and noticed mild palpitations over the next few days, so I bought another banana and they were back just as strong as they were! It's been a few months since I ate them and the palpitations (or episodes of them) have just about stopped again. I spoke about the banana connection to my cardiologist (a childhood friend) and he was stumped as he said the Potassium should improve things not make them worse. His wife was in the room and she's an Acupuncturist. She said she was taught increased stomach acids could cause Heart Palpitations and that Bananas are known to increase stomach acids. Well... My love of bananas is too strong to stop eating them completely, so I am hoping to find a really good/tasty variety of Banana. Maybe Gros Michel or or something else. Bryce has made a few suggestions. So, What does anyone else think about the Palpitation connection? Any Doctors in the group?

![]() I always like to expierment on people with plants and fruits. May be a sodium, calcium, potassium channel issue. I have theories I will bring up later but not in public.

![]() Under normal circumstances when the food is ingested tyramine is broken down or metabolised into their harmless metabolites by the enzyme monoamine oxidase present in the body. The lack of this enzyme in the body causes intolerance to food containing tyramine.Amines intolerance |

![]() Ok... Well, I started eating bananas again.... I started going with small bananas and even bought some manzanos, just so I didn't over do it. For a couple weeks I had no issues with my heart and palpitations. The other day, I selected a few of the Bigger bananas at the supermarket and the day after eating them, I started getting palpitations again.
Could it be they are 2 different varieties? I've attached pics of both types. One is short and curved and the other is large and mostly straight, except for a curve near the top. Maybe there's something in those larger ones that my heart just doesn't like? ![]() ![]()
