Default African Rhino Horn blooming! Pic intense.

This plant came to me as my first attempt to obtain RajaPuri.
Obviously it is not a RajaPuri and now that it's bloomed, the mystery is over!

I waited patiently for two years to find out what this was!

Hope you enjoy the pics.

Thanks Nancy!
They are, its hard to catch it with the camera. In person they are pretty stunning!

What was interesting was it only produced one hand of fruits.
I hope to update the thread with more pics when they plump up a bit more.

Nice Jared. This cultivar is pretty much the only true Horn Plantain in the states, there are many different varieties in Africa however. They are characterized by being a true plantain banana that produces only 1 hand of fruit and no male bud. Other varieties of plantain bananas can be False Horn, French Horn or French.

And here's some closeups of the lack of male bud, pics taken just now. The other pics were a couple days old. Update of the fruits as well.

That really cool Jarred! The fruits look very pale in color, and it's even more interesting that there is no male bud.

Interesting...any idea why there is no male bud present in this cultivar? Also, what would make it only produce one hand of fruit? Does it have something to do with it's genetics?

Thats just what Horn Plantains do...its 100% because of its genetics, because...thats what they do. Edible bananas don't need male flowers, so whenever they lost the male flowers along the line of evolution and selection, it was no consequence that they were absent, so they kept on going. Having one hand is also not a problem, and since Horn Plantains usually make big fruit, you still get a decent amount of food from one hand, so there was no reason to stop cultivating.
