Variegated Plants In the North.

These plants are generally easy to grow especially in containers.
Container growing is an easy way to control all variables of any plants growth.
It also allows your plant to be portable when winter months arrive.
I grow mine just like my other plants with a few exceptions.

Generally the plant is not cool weather tolerant and will pull back in unfavorable conditions.

the big aeae...
was that pot buried in the ground or how did you keep it from tipping over?

Plants are 17 feet tall with drip irrigation grown in a monitored kept garden.

Large plants commercially are PEGGED with 1/ 4 inch rebar to the ground.

The plant is similar to a Viente cohol with the growing conditions...
Target growing temps are 80 degrees and above for me.
Cool wet temperatures will cause this plant to pull back and possibly perish. I've had my share failures.

However in a conservatory or greenhouse with consistent warm temperatures this plant will flourish.

Large plants are pegged with rebar to stop from tipping.

Plant them outdoors in the best soil possible.
Or keep them in a container where you have more control.
Do what you can afford........do not skimp.

Grow the plant as you would all your others.
The plant develops a tall footprint which makes the plant difficult for home growers to manage indoors during the the winter.

Fertilize now for spring growth.

My grow in the north is different than your grow.

In zone 5-6 maybe 3-5 years but growing conditions can affect the outcome.
I have seen in zone 9 similar times with the same outcome.
Coastal Florida Zone 10 similar predictable grow pattern and height.
Same in zone 11.


Inexperienced growers have a hard time growing this COOL sensitive plant once it becomes chest high and underestimate the resources to grow the plant season to season. Folks have a difficult time with the large footprint.
