Hi I just bought a musa basjoo which is about 5 feet tall from a friend. I planted it in front of my town home in full sun and now the leaves are dying. It is 75-80 today and here in zone 7 Maryland it gets up to 100!on days. Will my musa survive this type of direct sun? Please help.

Please post a picture of the plant. ... When did you buy it and how long has it been in the ground since transplanting?

This might be transplant shock. If so start misting the leaves with the garden hose a couple of time a day while the roots acclimate to the new soil. .... Sunburned leave will die and drop off. New leaves will grow in a few days.

Great find.

Your plant can take the heat once the plant is established.

But your plant cannot take a transplant with no or little rootball without going through some sort of stress.
Usually your plant will lose leaves until the the plants root system is established in the new soil.
Without good roots to support those big leaves the leaves will wither.

Some folks just cut the leaves off anyway because they know they are going to lose them/look bad while the roots establish, this is quite common.

Leaves will grow back once the plant sorts itself out.
The plant is a wonderful spreader so hopefully your have left enough room

Was it in full sun before? If not shade it a little until it hardens up. Water,water,water, it will get over the transplant shock.

If leaves are turning red to brown then it's just that it hasn't been acclimated
to full sun yet. if they are just folding up that is just a normal reaction to the
intense sun and heat and they will unfold as they cool.
Everything Cincinnana and Iowa said is spot on. I have been growing these
for years and find they look their best with just morning sun and in a protected spot that doesn't get really high winds. Otherwise they can take heat and cold very well and are a real hardy banana that looks great
Some people on here might tell you that you do not need to protect them for winter, This is terrible advice. always make sure they are Protected for the winter.
I live in zone 7 and always protect mine. They always grow
back out every year but this last winter I lost a bunch. We had a particularly extra cold winter, much colder and longer than normal. If I would have
known that ahead of time, I would have protected them like I did when I
was in a zone 6 Just goes to show they need to be protected even in zone 7.

Hi Lovetogarden, I am located in Chilliwack, BC, Canada.
We have very limited resources for banana plants here in Canada
and basically have to import everything, and, or grow from seeds.
I have been growing banana plants for almost 30 years now.
They are my favorite tropical plant.
