Mislabeled African Rhino Horn
can anyone help me id this one? it was sold to me as ARH, but clearly isn't which is a bummer because I have planted it out. from my limited experience I want to say that it loks like a mysore, but I really have no clue. the petiole seems to be open/semi-closed and it has a red tinge to it.

Re: Mislabeled African Rhino Horn
any guesses? i have looked at a couple guides and they point to the pink midrib as a characteristic of mysore... the height seems to match

Does it have a mauve, coppery, reddish or bronze color? Do all cultivars in the Mysore subgroup have that trait? Height can vary dramatically, plant crop, ratoon, and many other reasons. Bunch position and many other related descriptors appear consistent with Mysore. What descriptors, if any, don't match?

yes, the newer leaves have a pink midrib with a coppery/bronze undertone and the pstem has a reddish tint. i am really not sure what other cultivars are in the mysore family. this is the second ratoon and i supplement it a lot with kitchen scraps, so it's probably the healthiest of all my bananas. this was one of the first banana plants that i bought online. i believe it was from florida hill nursery, but i'm not 100% sure.

Re: Mislabeled African Rhino Horn
yeah, I bought one a while back before I joined the forum and met all the awesome people on here. I fell a victim to one of the many places that send you misidentified plants. I finally got a couple of legit arh from a fellow member.

Re: Mislabeled African Rhino Horn
Could well be one of the Mysore varieties, my Pisang Ceylon or Pisang Klotek have more maroon color in the leaves though.
Love the Papaya in the background. What variety is it and has it fruited for you? |

the papaya in the background is a solo sunset. it has plenty of fruit on it, but they are on the small side (about the size of a mini football, but shaped like a bowling pin). i read that they are supposed to be small, but i didn't think they would be that small. i have a maradol on the same feeding regimen that have fruit closer to the size of a regular football. i also have a sunrise that has small fruit but they are much fuller (mini basketball size).

You cannot compare a Maradol fruit with the Sunset. Sunset Papaya is by far on the smaller side with fruits averaging 14 oz to 20 oz while Maradol fruit can weigh 3 to 5 pounds. I have tasted them all but prefer the Hawaiian solo varieties over the Maradol, but maybe I have to try to grow the Maradol instead as they are supposed to take cooler temperatures better than the Hawaiian varieties. |
