When they were cooking the tuna you could smell it from 10 miles away. |

Guess it depends on what your fishing for and where! What is your fave and what is it used for? I can't tell by the pic.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
It's the penn 430SSg spinning reel with 71/2' rod rated for 6lb. I use it for most all light saltwater, corbina, bay bass, spotfin, perch and now I'll use it for shortfin corvina

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Well if it's anything like the old Penn reels it should last forever!

Interesting, never heard them called that. I've always heard people refer to them as false albacore. It's fishing school!

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
The next time we have Santa Ana winds I'm going balloon fishing! I figure I can fly line a mac or a squid way out past the breakers using nature! It would even work better with an outgoing tide. My old 50H holds 450 yards of 20# mono, so that means I can load 900 yards of 40# power pro braid! Game on! :)

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Depends where you go. In Malibu there are some within balloon distance.
Google maps would work for this! |
Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Looks like the kelp is about 3-400 yards at this spot where I fish sometimes. You can see the color of the kelp.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
You could, but then that's polluting and I pull enough garbage out of the ocean already. I'd just tie it on and let the balloon move the bait around. With braid having no stretch and the wind and tide pulling away from me keeping the line tight I should be able to see/feel a bite. I wonder if the balloon rubbing on the braid would pop it? Guess I can do some testing.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Or I could get a kite setup, but that seems like a lot of work just to fish from the sand.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Then there is current to think about too. If it's pulling either way too strong it might not work. Hmm

Leos were spotted in numbers today at my regular spot. I'll be there in the morning to see if they want to play!

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Ok, so I showed up with my perch rig and shark rig. Plan was to catch perch and use for shark bait. Well the perch were not down with that idea. Nobody on the beach could catch a perch which is highly unusual. I went old school and c rigged size 14 bait holder, split a GCSW dowm the middle, cut in half lengthwise and got a perch on my first cast. I shared this perch with a fellow board member from the fishing forum I frequent, and he hooked a nice Leopard shark within seconds! I helped him land the leo by tail grabbing it. He caught two more leos after that one! I used the same bait, same rigging (he helped me) same spot with no success. The Leo gods were not shining on me today. Awesome day on the sand anyway! :)
This was the second Leo he caught that I tail grabbed. The third was even bigger! ![]() |
Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Nice size Mitchel. Sharks have a beautifull fried steaks IMO. Yummy!

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
All were photographed and released. From what I hear Leos do taste good, so good that they are farmed.

Most of them will rust out pretty quickly. Not a lot of stainless steel hooks, and even those will eventually (years) rust away.

Re: Surf Fishin and fish tale thread
Some old question about hooks for catch and release when you have to cut the line. Not sure how I got that far back in this thread.
Leopard sharks being farmed? Really, where? They are super cool fish. Love to catch them with my classes. Gets the students pretty excited. |
