Okay, so some of you might find it odd that while I have been reintroducing the dawn redwood to Appalachia for the past 25 years, that I have never had a garden before. I decided over the winter to get one going, long before the damnpanic ever hit.
I decided to go vertical on my tomatoes and cucumbers, and this was the result; a nice tidy garden with peppers and potatoes growing in the adjacent spaces. Results weren't bad, but I did not have enough sun. Next year, I'll be using raised beds in the front yard for the spuds and maters, with this trellis for the cukes only. Peppers will get moved into the tomato bed as well. This year was an experiment, but I sure learned a lot. Now, I'm busy making compost to fill the beds with over the winter.

Joe, I grew my first crop of potatoes over the winter last year in a tub on the back porch under a grow light! The ones in the ground this year were in shade, so I only got a few marbles to eat. That's why I'm making the raised beds out front for next year; full sun.
Since I started everything last spring, I think I've logged a thousand hours on YouTube learning all of this stuff. It's a treasure trove of info. Right now, I'm pounding charcoal down to make biochar. I had no idea you can still get real chunks of charcoal for your BBQ; not the formed briquettes. I found it on YouTube though. Got an 8.8 lb. bag at Food Lion for 8 bucks. I'll spend a few hours breaking it up and sifting it out, add some fresh compost and a week's worth of urine, and in six weeks I'll have enough activated biochar for next season. All for $8.oo. Now that I'm back, I'll start posting a lot of this stuff.

I forgot to mention, I grew my potatoes from white potatoes I bought in the grocery store. I just picked the ones that chitted (with a C).

Oh well .... now I'll have to post pics of my garden too. Right now I have cabbages (regular &Chinese), bok choi,, and onions growing in the green house. Hopefully I can plant some of those next week. .... l'll be starting tomtoes, peppers and eggplant seeds in the greenhouse mid February. .....l have greens (mustard, turnips, & collards) growing now and been eating those since last fall.

I think I put too much mulch on top. I can't feel them, but I know there has to be something in there, further down. In all likelihood, I will dump the pot over the weekend and share what I have (or don't have).
Since I am still new to this, I am also still learning, which is really amazing my dad. I had multiple shoots with flowers, so the mystery is: where are the spuds? I'll find out on Sunday. Grab some popcorn...

From what I see in your photo, the garden is looking very good. I am just an amateur gardener. It's like a hobby for me. I wish I could have such a beautiful garden. But, instead, I have a very big and beautiful lawn. I love to spend time trimming the lawn. It's like a meditating period for me. My wife gifted me this year a new weed trimmer, and I am very pleased with it. She got inspired from an article where are described the best weed trimmers. I like to see how my kids and our dog are having fun on the lawn.
