Whew! I am done posting pictures for a while. I was playing catch up. I hate it when the site is down!

That sounds like a fun one to watch Cameron. How soon after sprouting would you put it in water? It is a pond plant right? Do they come in different colors? I have a little pond and have rush and canna in it. I don't know anything about pond plants though. ~J

Cool Cam!

Yup, just file a Nelumbo seed and drop it in a shallow dish filled with about 2 inches of water. You'll add more later. If they're fresh seeds, they'll start germinating in a few days.

The warmer the water is kept, the faster germination will be. I kept my dish on a heat mat. Light is needed however as soon as the seed pops.

Good luck!

Hi everyone. I have a total of 8 seeds, and 3 of them are soaking in warm water. I'm going to wait until they develop their first aerial leaves before i move them. though i have a couple of gallon containers that im going to transplant them in as soon as they sprout. then when they get bigger im going to buy some 10 gallon buckets and grow them in those

I have Nelumbo seed too, in many different colors including red!

I have the pink sacred lotus like you also Cam...and white, cream, and a yellow type also.

They're a super fun plant to grow and experiment with.

Oh if they're swelling....they'll sprout! Change the water if it gets brown from the seeds.

Thanks about my old Nelumbo plant, Cam. I even had a hidey-house in there for the minnows. Minnows are great and they're tough...they'll keep the algae levels down and eat mesquito larvae also.

At first when i cut the seed case the inside looked shriveled and I was worried about that, but now they are all swollen. I cant wait to see new growth. I'll need to remember to get some minnows or at least the mosquito doughnut things. I have a bad mosquito problem every year, and I dont want them to be any worse lol

Wrinkles are a good sign Cam (unless they're on my face! )

...they just mean the seed is swelling and getting ready to pop. No need to worry.

Yes, the minnows really took care of my mesquito and algae problems.

Sherry did you ever get blooms? Those are really neat. I have some lotus seeds, but they are old from a long ago trade from far, far away. (play Star Wars music here!!! ) I may have to dig um out, brush um off, and give um a soak. Ha! Ha! I mean they did get ancient seeds from the Egyptian tombs to sprout.

I have goldfish in my pond for mosquito control. I buy those cheapo feeder ones. They come in pretty colors and look good darting around in there.~J

Hi Sherry if I'm successful with these, I think I'm going to take up a new hobby LOL. Janan lotus seeds remain viable for several years. There was even one that scientists grew that was 1,300 years old and it still sprouted. The seed coat is what helps it remain viable for a long time

Thumbs down Re: Insomnia Thread...

No but I would have...remember it got dumped before it could bloom JaNan?! That was a bad time but I'm over it now.

Yes that's right Cam...they say the seeds are viable for 100-1000 years!!! Guess I don't have to sprout mine any time soon!

Oh no Sherry it got dumped? Thats terrible. I have even read about people getting the ones at craft shops to sprout. I always thought they dried out the seed pods even more. I may try that out if these dont make it, but I'm going to stay positive. Are you going to try again?

Wink Re: Insomnia Thread...

Yeah I heard that also Cam...but too bad our craftstores don't carry them!

Yes, a couple years ago a bunch of plants were ripped off from me and my container pond got dumped! The fish were killed. It was horrible.

They'll never get another one of my plants though so no worries.
