Don't feel bad JaNan...we all thought it was! It sure looks like one.
Those pictures are spectacular and I never knew they were such pretty and unique plants. They look blue-ish to me...are they? Wow, Cameron! Those are really great pics of your bloom. How pretty! Thanks for sharing with us. : ) |

Cameron that color is so beautiful!!!! I love it!
![]() The older pads are bluish, greenish, grayish. New growth is very green. The new growth is what the nopales are made from. The flowers are very thin and delicate - like a very thin crepe paper. ~J

Thanks Janan! It didnt bloom last year so I'm excited about it blooming this year. It still has 2 other blooms that havent opened up yet. I love the deciduous magnolias, though I wouldnt mind growing a southern magnolia one day.

Sherry the flowers are a beautiful yellowwith many petals. After the flower falls off, the fruit underneath turns a scarlet reddish purple by the fall of the year here in zone 7-b

Re: Insomnia Thread...
Wow, they sound kinda beautiful Drew...are the fruits real tasty?
I can't wait to watch it grow. I give it blooming fertilizer so I wouldn't be surprised if it really did put out a flower before long. When is their normal bloom period? Very cool JaNan, that you were kind enough to share something so special with me. You guys have got me into all sorts of different things and I sure love the stuff I'm growing now. I'm about to post a shot in the pepper-a-holic thread... : ) |

You are funny Drew! From those links it looks like the blooms will follow soon after the new growth. The fruit is called a tuna and it has a lot of seeds in it and tastes a lot like dragon fruit to me. Both nopales and tuna are very healthy. ~J

Do they grow best in the garden or in a pot?

They are quite heavy after 5-6 segments are full size with the Tunas, in a watered pot!
You could grow them in the garden and then cut them back and bring them inside for the winter! |

Well mine are outside, they can get quite large. But you will be able to contain them in a pot easily. You can always eat the young pads and the fruit. The pads when cooked and with butter and salt taste like green beans, I think they are delicious. You can actually buy them here already cleaned and cooked in jars in the Mexican food isle at the grocery stores, and sometimes just the fresh pads in produce. ~J
